Catherine lived in one of the most turbulent periods of the Church's history. And yet, rather than retreat into silence, she stepped forward. She traveled widely, pressing for the internal reform of the Church and fostering peace. She wrote with boldness and clarity to kings, cardinals, and popes. She even urged Pope Gregory XI, who was living in Avignon at the time, to return to Rome. and he listened.
What made her so fearless? It was love. A deep, total, Christocentric love that gave her the strength to speak truth where others fell silent. As Pope Benedict XVI shared about St. Catherine, "For her Christ was like the spouse with whom a relationship of intimacy, communion and faithfulness exists; he was the best beloved whom she loved above any other good."
She was a young laywoman with no formal power, and yet she changed the Church. Her witness challenges each of us: where is God calling us to speak with courage today?
Saint Catherine of Siena, pray for us.

Jesus tells us in today's Gospel: "I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me." That intimate, faithful, and selfless relationship is the model for every shepherd in the Church. To be a bishop is to be entrusted with the care of souls, and there is no greater honor. Each one of you — your joys, your struggles, your faith — is a sacred gift that I do not take lightly.
Today is also the World Day of Prayer for Vocations, and it is no coincidence that we reflect on the Good Shepherd on this day. Every man and woman called to religious life whether as a priest, deacon, sister, or brother, is being invited into that same shepherding love. A vocation is not like a title or a job that reflects only a part of who you are. It is a life given to God. It is a call to lay down that life for others, to know the people you serve deeply, and to lead them always toward Christ.
Let us pray today for those who are discerning their vocation, and ask the Good Shepherd to guide them with His voice. And if you feel that quiet stirring in your heart toward priesthood or religious life, I urge you, do not be afraid to listen.

Tradition has it that Mark was dragged through the streets of Alexandria and died a martyr for the faith he had spent his life proclaiming.
May his witness inspire us to proclaim the Gospel even when it is difficult.
Saint Mark the Evangelist, pray for us.

Born to a noble family in Bohemia, Adalbert was made bishop of Prague at just 27 years old. He worked tirelessly to reform his diocese, was twice driven into exile by those who resisted his efforts. Upon his second exile, he began preaching to pagans. He and two companions were martyred by pagan priests near the Baltic Sea.
What strikes me most about Adalbert is not his suffering, but his perseverance in faith. He was pushed out, cast aside, and physically exiled from his community. Despite rejection, however, he kept sharing the message of the Lord, a message that he knew to be true. For Adalbert, the Good News was too important, and the people who needed to hear it were too precious, for him to stop.
As we honor his memory today, let us ask ourselves: what obstacles tempt us to grow silent or step back from our own call to witness? May Saint Adalbert's courage inspire us to keep going — trusting that God is always present in our faithfulness.
Saint Adalbert of Prague, pray for us.

It is not about material poverty, but about recognizing that our hearts are restless and incomplete on their own.
Only the Lord Jesus can bring the fulfillment, hope, and joy for which we were created. To be poor in spirit is to detach from what overwhelms and preoccupies us, and to place our trust entirely in Him.
When we do, we begin to live for the Kingdom that alone endures.

The birth of a child — a human person with a soul, dignity, and destiny — is itself a miracle.
Science can describe processes, but it cannot explain the mystery of a life created in the image and likeness of God.
Grace is not accidental. It is the quiet, constant work of God among us.
