Since starting the next phase of my medical training (as in OBGYN resident) I've been busier than ever and haven't had much time for beading, between settling into a new role and new city. Butterflies are often used in hospitals as a subtle way to alert other healthcare providers that are not on the patient's central care team but may have to enter a patient's room (such as imaging technicians, porters, and lab technicians) that a death has occurred. They are often used in labour & delivery departments to signal a stillbirth or fetal loss.
These two butterflies were made for the Thunder Bay labour & delivery department and their patients. The species chosen are two of the most familiar to residents of Northern Ontario, the monarch and the tiger swallowtail. They are also my first 3D pieces, using metal and stiff boards to lift their delicate beaded wings at an upwards angle.
I hope these lovingly-made pieces are able to bring good medicine and healing to anyone experiencing a loss in the hospital department that has taught me so much 🦋

I am white-coded, and am afforded every possible white-privilege. However, my whiteness should* not take away from the Indigenous experience. To believe that is to believe in colonial blood quantum.
I acknowledge that many "pretendians" look like me.
I will tell anyone who asks respectfully about my Métis heritage, and about (what's known about) my Cree roots. But I do not owe you family stories of dispossession or residential school. That I do not feel is mine to share at this time.
I am not here to take opportunities from Indigenous kin, acknowledging the privileges already granted to me. I expressly did not apply to medical school as an Indigenous applicant due to this reason.
I will do everything I can to give back to Indigenous communities. I want to uplift, and teach Indigenous allyship and the centering of Indigenous values among my healthcare colleagues. This page is not a sale account taking away from other Indigenous businesses, but is mainly for sharing art. I acknowledge the privilege I have in reconnecting to traditions and land; I try to share what I can on this page, like hide tanning.
I think that many Métis, and to go further many "pretendians", do not acknowledge how their white privilege colours their Indigeneity and their experiences. This has always been a red flag to me and I hope it is to you as well.
We constantly must work on, in the case of whiteness, naming it, de-constructing it, and de-centering it. If not, we stand firmly in the status quo, and therefore in the continued colonization/dispossession/marginalization of people of the global majority (BIPOC).
This transparency in proximity to whiteness is the reason I make this post. I think I especially owe this to Indigenous kin. It is the reason I will always put "settler" before I present myself as Métis. I am not perfect, but I am constantly going to work on this, much like the practice of allyship.
So I am white, and I am also Métis. I am claimed by my community and my family. Don't think you can decide who I am from an online presence.
