I’ve always been scared of painting complex scenes like this, so in order to force myself to make bolder simplifications, I decided to use my smaller sketchbook and not do any line work before painting. Really like how this turned out!

I took a walk in Meiji Jingu shrine, a serene forest area in the heart of Tokyo. There’s a cafe inside with a beautiful terrace among the trees, and I was very inspired by the surroundings to paint this green backdrop in my sketch.
It was drizzling a little bit, and the raindrops made these nice little bloom marks on the background, which just captures the vibe so vividly.

ここ数週間は本当に怒涛の日々でしたので、ちょっと自分に休息をあげて、ちょこっと落書きをする時間を許してあげることにしました。
都心にありながら、静かな森が広がる明治神宮へ散歩に出かけました。境内には木々に囲まれた美しいテラス席のあるカフェがあって、その雰囲気にすごくインスピレーションを受けて、スケッチにこの緑の背景を描いたんです。
小雨がパラパラと降っていたのですが、雨粒が背景に素敵なにじみの跡を作ってくれて、それがまた当時の空気感をそのまま絵に綴じ込められたかのよう。嬉しいですね🌧

之前這幾週真的忙到要抓狂了，所以，決定好好獎勵自己一個休息日，隨筆畫些小塗鴉。
明治神宮雖然就在東京市中心，但這片靜謐的森林真的很療癒。裡面有間漂亮的森林露台咖啡廳，周圍的景色給的靈感 讓我給這幅速寫畫上了綠色的背景。
當時下著綿綿細雨，雨滴在背景上打出了漂亮的水漬痕跡，恰好把當場的氛圍感原原本本地捕捉到了畫裡。

Hi, I’m Bingying 👋 a traveling watercolor painter based in Tokyo, Japan.
My journey has taken me across the globe: born in China 🇨🇳, raised in Canada 🇨🇦, and spent many years in the U.S. 🇺🇸 before moving to Japan 🇯🇵 in 2023. I speak English, Chinese, and Japanese.
I love capturing small moments of joy in my sketchbook as I travel. I sketch on location whenever I can, because it helps me connect with every destination more deeply and creates vivid memories that last a lifetime ✨
I’m a self-taught artist (started 6 years ago!) and while painting is my passion, it’s a hobby that’s completely separate from my day job 😅
