Big Group Hug CEO Bernadene Voss shares why more families are struggling to afford the basics for their children. As the cost of living continues to rise, these everyday essentials are becoming harder to afford. The basics aren’t basic when you don’t have them.

Make your tax-deductible donation before 30 June at the link in our bio to help children feel safe, warm, and supported.
You’re never too young to make a difference! During the school holidays, Amara, her siblings, and her friend decided to run their own fundraiser for Big Group Hug, and thanks to the incredible support of their fantastic neighbours in the Eltham community, they raised $237!

The girls sold homemade cookies, brownies, and hot chocolates topped with marshmallows, fresh cream and chocolate sauce, which were VERY WELL received by locals stopping by!

What a terrific way to spend the school holidays while helping children and families doing it tough, proving what can happen when young people are encouraged to support others from an early age.

A huge thank you to Amara, her friend, and everyone who supported their stall - especially on this rainy day!
A huge THANK YOU to our incredible BFT Airport West community for getting behind our Mother’s Day donation drive ❤️

Every single donation, whether big or small, will help support mums, babies, and families doing it tough across Melbourne, and we honestly couldn’t be prouder of what this community can do when everyone comes together.

The amount of generosity shown over the past few weeks has been amazing. From nappies and wipes to clothing, toys, and everyday essentials, the studio absolutely filled up with donations.

Thank you for always showing up for more than just training. This is what community is all about 🤍
After our recent call out for winter clothing, The Les Twentyman Foundation in Footscray reached out again with a very large donation of brand-new clothing for teens! These are the exact items children need right now to stay warm through winter. A huge thanks to our good friends at Les Twentyman, these items will go straight to children who need it.
“I feel different. I feel very mature in these clothes.”
Zara (name changed for privacy) is 18 and preparing to step into the childcare sector, a big moment, and one that starts with feeling ready.
Through FutureFIT, a partnership between Big Group Hug and Ready Set Australia, our latest client Zara received a personalised styling session at our Tarneit Hub, which is proudly supported by Wyndham City Council.
Before the session, Zara shared she didn’t feel confident putting together an outfit for interviews. Afterwards, that shifted to extremely confident.
Having the right clothing makes the wearer feel like they can approach opportunities feeling prepared, capable, and ready to be taken seriously.
FutureFIT is designed to support young jobseekers experiencing disadvantage like Zara as they take their next step, with practical tools, guidance, and the confidence to move forward.
Because when confidence grows, so do opportunities.
We would also like to thank Ford for their support of this work.
TW: family violence. “I spent years wishing he would hit me. I thought a bruise would be proof.”

This powerful story of a Big Group Hug recipient was originally published by Mamamia as part of their Coercive Control series. It highlights the reality many women and children are living through behind closed doors.

Michelle left with little more than a bag of clothes for herself and her daughters. Starting again meant rebuilding from nothing while carrying the emotional weight of years of abuse and control.

Through support from services and community organisations including Big Group Hug, Michelle and her children were able to begin again safely.

As cost of living pressures continue to rise, more mothers and children are needing support to escape crisis and rebuild.

At the link in our bio, you can read Michelle’s story and help us continue providing practical support to families doing it tough by making a tax-deductible donation before 30 June.
Wow! The generosity from the community at Stella Maris Catholic Primary School in Point Cook has been nothing short of incredible! Through their Winter Warmers Appeal, the school collected enough donations to fill TWO carloads of winter essentials for children doing it tough this winter.

This kind of experience is so valuable for kids, as they see the importance of helping others in their community, they learn compassion, inclusion, generosity and the value of practical support. These are the moments that help shape thoughtful, community-minded young people.

A big thank you to the staff, students, families and wider school community for getting behind this appeal so generously. Your support will help children stay warm, safe and cared for during a very difficult winter for many families.
And that's a wrap on our winter knit project for 2026.
What an amazing turnout we have this year. I am so blown away and my heart is overflowing!!!

As a community we are giving the gift of warmth and love this winter with 2 blankets, 20 beanies, 5 headbands, 2 scarves and 1 set of hand warmers 💖💖💖

All items were dropped off to the the other week!

In a world where you can be anything, be kind, and you all were!

Much love to everyone who took part!

Big news: Big Group Hug is expanding!
We are bursting at the seams at our Thomastown warehouse, so to help more children in crisis, we’re searching for a bigger northern suburbs home, giving us the space to redistribute essentials to even more families.
To celebrate this next chapter, Double Donation Day is open early. Every donation until 10 pm, 18 March is doubled, helping children access the essentials they need to thrive.
Donate now and double your impact at the link in our bio!
Every week, we see children going without the basics, clothes that fit, shoes that match, equipment that keeps them safe. For 1 in 6 Australian kids living in poverty, even small things can feel out of reach.

The challenge is that not everything 'still wearable' really helps. Worn, torn, stained, or mismatched items can leave a child feeling different, or left out, when all they want is to belong.

That’s where thoughtful, intentional donations make a real difference. When you give items in good condition - clothes, shoes, books, or toys you’d happily hand to a friend - you’re not just clearing out your kid's closet. You’re giving a vulnerable child confidence, comfort, safety, and a sense of normalcy.

Because when each box of love arrives and sparks joy, the child who opens it feels proud, included, and seen.

Discover our top tips for how to donate preloved kids’ items in our new article, including our insights on condition, packing, and safety guidelines to help children in need while reducing waste at the link in our bio.
