They also explored the Bat House. Fort Leaton is home to a colony of four species of bats - the Cave Myotis, Yuma Myotis, Pallid Bats, and Mexican Free-tailed bats. Many of the bats come to Fort Leaton to have and raise their pups every year.
Thank you to Ranger Arian Velasquez-Ornelas for guiding this intrepid group of future conservationists. We appreciate you and all the park rangers at the State Park!

Big thanks to our event partners: the City of Presidio, the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, and the Presidio Police Department, who grilled 200 hot dogs for the hungry crowd. Thank you to for setting the mood with her DJ set! Thank you to BBCA's Programs Director, Elvira Hermosillo, for all of her hard work to make this fun, family-friendly event happen every year. Last, but not least, thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make the event a huge success. We can't wait for next year!

They urgently requested more transparency.
This outspoken, crystal-clear message from the judges expanded the ever-growing, bipartisan coalition of opponents to a border wall in Big Bend even more.
Together, the county judges—who are the highest elected officials and serve as the heads of emergency management in their counties—represent 100% of the nearly 1,300-mile Texas-Mexico border.
Their request for more collaboration and transparency comes after months of ongoing confusion about what the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) plans for the border barrier in Big Bend actually are.
And literally just two days after the border county judges’ letter for more transparency was sent, on Thursday, April 23, CBP deleted their “Smart Wall Map” from their website entirely. Now, the "Smart Wall Map" page on their own website doesn't contain any maps at all.
How's that for transparency and blatantly ignoring fourteen border county judges from Texas?
“This place isn’t just where I work, it’s where I’ve built my life and raised my kid. We call the Rio Grande our cathedral,” said Billy Miller, a professional river guide and landowner in Redford, Texas. “I’ve spent more than two decades guiding on the river, and if a border wall cuts off access, that’s the end of my career. No one comes to Big Bend to see steel walls and razor wire. If they build this, they’re not just destroying a landscape, they’re wiping out our way of life.”

This Earth Day, there are some small things you can do to help the environmnent:
🚯 Kick disposable plastic water bottles to the curb! Did you know that plastic water bottles take more than 400 years to break down? Keep plastic out of the landfills and use a reuseable water bottle instead
♻ Recycle. Cans, plastic, cardboard, even tires can be recycled!
🚿 Reduce water consumption. Some easy ways to use less water include taking shorter showers, making sure your water meter readings are correct, and checking irrigation systems, hoses, and water lines for leaks
👩🌾 Get your hands dirty. Plant a garden or a tree! Plants and trees are natural air purifiers, provide shade, and enrich the soil.
🍎 Compost food scraps. Bonus, you can use the compost in your garden
🚴 🚶🏻♀Riding your bike and walking reduce car pollution to the water and air - it's healthy for you, too.
💡 Keep the Dark Skies dark! Keeping outside lights off at night and using Dark Sky-compliant lights helps migrating birds get where they're going safely and prevent light pollution
🤳 Call your elected officials and tell them you don't want a wall in the Big Bend. A wall would prevent animals and people alike from accessing the Rio Grande River and other water sources, interrupt animal migration, increase flooding risks and pollution, and damage native plants and rare species. Find your elected officials here:
Small choices add up. Anything you do to help the environment helps. Happy Earth Day!
