But did they really lose?

Because they gain something just as important.

They learn how to handle defeat and not give up after failure.
They learn to step onto the strip even when they’re scared.
They learn to see their mistakes and become stronger because of them.
They learn to support others even when things are hard for them too.
They learn to work as a team and be part of something bigger. And that matters — just like we talked about in the previous video about NAC.

There are always only a few winning spots. And that’s normal.

Because real growth doesn’t begin only after victories — it also begins after defeats.

Sometimes losing isn’t a step backward.
It’s part of the path forward.

NAC is a qualifier. It’s national points. It’s ranking. It’s a chance to enter the system and make the U.S. national team. And that’s exactly why everyone makes the same mistake — they give this tournament too much importance.

And that’s when everything starts to fall apart.

Because the moment winning becomes “too important,” your mind starts giving you commands: “don’t make a mistake,” “be careful,” “don’t take risks,” “just play it safe.” It sounds logical. But this is exactly where the problem begins.

Your body knows how to fence. You’ve done it hundreds of times. You have speed, timing, and a sense of distance. But in that moment, your mind doesn’t let you perform. It’s trying to protect you from the pain of losing.

And you start to tighten up.

The lightness in your footwork disappears. Your hand feels heavy. Your decisions come too late. You’re no longer fencing your game — you’re trying not to lose. And those are two completely different things.

And this is where the most frustrating part happens.

You might be better prepared than anyone else. But because of that internal tension, you lose to those who simply step on the strip and fight freely.

At every NEC, coaches say the same thing: athletes shake like they’ve never stepped on the strip before. Not because they’re weak — but because they made this event too big in their own minds.

How to rewire your thinking and increase your chances of winning — we teach that in our individual training sessions.

Why do we teach kids to suit up quickly?

When fencers hear “suit up,” instead of getting dressed, they get distracted — phones, conversations, computers.
And then they start getting ready at the last minute. Always running late.

So we set a clear time limit
and one simple rule: if you’re late — there are consequences (push-ups).

No yelling. No pressure.
Just a system where the child learns responsibility on their own.

And you’d be surprised how quickly behavior changes:
— they become more focused
— the habit of procrastinating disappears
— respect for the process is built
— character starts to develop

This isn’t just about training.
It’s about a skill they will carry for life.

And it’s not just about fencing. It’s the atmosphere: energy, friends, excitement — like a big celebration.

Starting next month, a professional photographer will capture it all. All photos — free. Something your child will look back on years later.
