“Baby is more efficient”—but that’s not always true.
If your baby has a shallow latch, is sleepy at the breast, or transfers poorly… your pump might actually be doing a better job right now.
Things like: poor latch or positioning, prematurity, tethered oral tissues, oral dysfunction, birth trauma, body tension and asymmetry- can all impact milk transfer.
And pumps on the market now aren’t like the one I used 13 years ago- with a good pump and good fitting flange pumps can be very efficient.

When baby is nursing we want areola + nipple in their mouth. They are using a combo of compression and vacuum to remove the milk.
Your pump is different.
The majority of pumps are using just suction (vacuum to remove milk). So we only want your nipple in that flange tunnel.

How many of us carry water bottles around and take sips of water all day long? 💧

Babies are very good at regulating their need to nurse, if we let them. Once we put them on a schedule we are taking charge of their feedings.
Breast milk contains hormones that are involved in food intake regulation and energy balance.
Leptin is an appetite regulating hormone and it was only discovered in breast milk in 1997. 😮
This is what we know from research:
➡️ It’s both made in the mammary gland and transferred from maternal plasma
➡️ Plays a role in infant intake of milk
➡️ May play a role in programming future metabolic health
Why is this important?
Following your infant’s lead for feeding or cue-based feeding ties directly into this hormone in milk. Infants have the ability to recognize when they are full and when they are hungry. *(I’m talking about healthy, full-term infants in this case. This is general education and not medical advice.
