As the setting sun broke through, it illuminated the lone standing stone of Machrie Moor 3, bathing the landscape in magnificent golden light.
Once joined by eight other stones, it now stands in solitude, holding such presence on the wild moors.
With recent findings that another lost circle of stone or timber may have existed at Machrie, it feels really special to share a new image (that’s not in fog!) from this incredible ancient landscape.

I wanted to photograph these beautiful stones from an angle they are not often seen from. I ended up knee deep in bracken and bog to get this one, but it was so worth it. I was really drawn to the shape of the centre stone - I think it almost looks like a wolf howling 🌙

I first photographed Scorhill at night in 2020, when Comet Neowise crossed our skies. Returning in the darkness this time felt just as magical, yet more familiar. As I sat in the stillness with my back against one of the smaller stones, I couldn’t help but think of the many that have come before me, each drawn to this place, wondering, and gazing up at the same sky.

Machrie Moor 2 is one of several ancient sites scattered across the moors on the wild and beautiful Isle of Arran in Scotland. These huge sandstone megaliths form part of a remarkable prehistoric landscape of mysterious cairns, cists and stone circles.
I only had five days on Arran, and coming home with a photograph of this site was an absolute dream of mine!! With endless rain forecast in March, it felt like it might never happen. But on my first day I got so incredibly lucky, - between rain showers, the skies cleared and golden light flooded the moor.
