I’m tackling the theme of “movement” this month with the sketchbook club, and Katie is exploring dry media with her Patreons, so it felt like the perfect combo!
Once you get over the fact that they move at a million miles an hour and never stay still for more than a second, it actually becomes very fun and hilariously chaotic. We recorded our desks too and you can watch the video (of both of them together!) on our respective patreons.
We didn’t actually show eachother our work until the end and it was really interesting to see how we had tackled the subject so differently! I went for the “omg what’s happening let’s fill pages of sketches” approach (🤣) and Katie went for a super calming scene - drawing the landscape and fitting in birds as they came and went - genius! You can give both a try and see which you prefer! I know I’ll definitely be trying Katie’s approach soon!
These are a few pages from that session along with a few from the days following when I JUST COULD NOT STOPPPPP! Drawing movement is one of those things where it suddenly starts to click a bit after a few messy pages.
Not perfect by any means, but these pages feel so much more alive than where I used to be.

I’ve been thinking a lot about how to capture movement in my sketchbook lately… as it’s more challenging than I expected!
So I’ve been watching birds (a lot 😅), and instead of trying to draw them perfectly, I’ve been focusing on how they move. Something that’s really helped is letting the drawings stay loose and not overworking them too quickly.
These are from a couple of sketchbook sessions where I was just observing and responding as best I could! … not worrying about getting it “right”, just trying to keep up with what I was seeing.
And it’s made me realise how tricky this can feel… like where do you even start with something that won’t stay still?
So inside Sketchbook Club this month, that’s exactly what we’re working on! Not polished drawings, but understanding movement first. Slowing it down, (and speeding up!) breaking it into something manageable, and building confidence from there.

I’ve been really drawn to greens (so many greens!!) and have loved throwing everything at my sketchbook pages - different shades, textures and marks.
Some of these were quick studies, playing with an idea… and some just trying to capture a feeling of a place. Others I slowed down with a bit more - which is hard for me at the moment as I seem to want to rush everything 😂😂
Also slightly obsessed with:
– scribbly grasses
– tiny pops of flowers
– and anything that feels a bit overgrown

I realised I haven’t introduced myself on here for a while, so hey hey hey…! I’m Becca!
I’m an illustrator living by the sea in Cornwall with my husband Ben and our two Border Terriers, Pippa & Evie (who regularly appear in my sketchbooks and stories!)
I create children’s books, nature inspired illustrations … in fact I LOVE working on all sorts of wildlife themed projects. The series is called Epic Journeys - an idea that stemmed from a mini project we did on my Patreon last year… It’s all about the wild migrations of animals across sea, land and sky. The first book, Ocean Voyagers, is already in the works 🐋🌊 and here is the COVER!!
This project is so close to my heart 💛 I’ve poured all my love of wildlife and illustration into these books, and designed them to be dyslexic-friendly, because every child deserves to feel part of the adventure. Growing up, I struggled to learn in the “normal” way and therefore spent my life thinking I was stupid. Finding out I was dyslexic as an adult changed everything - and now I want every child to know that being different can be their greatest strength, rather than something that feels like it should be hidden.
This is honestly a dream come true. 🥹 Little Becca who filled pages with animal drawings and played endlessly with her beanie babies would not believe this is happening. Thank you for cheering me on … I can’t wait to show you everything!!! ✨
