Voted one of Canada's Top 50 Restaurants, within Shokunin you'll find authentic Japanese cuisine, a cozy interior, and cocktails crafted to perfection by Calgary's Best Bartender, Kayla Atayiu. From a nori bomb and Tokyo fields sour to an ume-shu negroni and yuzu sidecar, Kayla whips of some of Calgary's most unique cocktails in mere seconds.
As the city shut down this spring, Shokunin temporarily closed their doors, forcing Kayla to shift her focus from being behind the bar to creating cocktail kits for at-home. She also helped with takeout services as the restaurant pivoted and continued to serve its community during this time. Kayla is so glad that the restaurant has such loyal guests, allowing them to remain partially open for these services and to fully reopen at the beginning of June.
During this time, you can support Kayla Atayiu and Shokunin by continuing to support your local restaurants and bars by eating out and ordering meals in. Kayla loves seeing her regular customers again, as Shokunin is back in business and more than ready to serve up all your favourites. Make sure to stop in for one of her perfectly crafted cocktails so you can see what the fuss is all about.
Just like countless other Calgary businesses, COVID-19 impacted Twisted Element greatly as they shut down for three months and completely changed their business model. The bar will remain a safe space for the gender- and sexually-diverse community of Calgary, but the owners here have revisited the vision associated with their nightclub's future. The shutdown has allowed Twisted to re-establish itself as a LGBTQ safe haven community hub and space, with the plan to return to their former nightclub glory when regulations allow in the future.
So for now, you can support Twisted Element, soon to be Twisted Pride Pub, by visiting their newly-established community hub seven days a week, complete with a network of local food trucks as well as food and drink service for tables of up to six people. As Twisted will not be operating as a nightclub for the time being, the music will be at a lower volume, social distancing measures are in place and dancing will not be permitted. Information such as hours of business and offerings may change, so make sure to check back on the Twisted website to stay up-to-date before you head on down.
Congrats to for winning Best Boxing Studio 2 x years in a row!
Boxing like you've never seen it before, Rumble is a combination of fight club meets nightclub to equal badass fun. Opening its doors in 2016, this business now has two hoppin' locations in Calgary to get the blood flowing every day of the week. Whether you're a boxing fanatic or you're new to the sport, Rumble has knowledgeable staff to train you and then motivate you to take it all out on the bag.
Like most other businesses, Rumble chose to voluntarily close its doors in mid-March at the start of the pandemic. The regulations and strict guidelines put in place by the Alberta government have made it challenging for small businesses and boutique fitness studios like Rumble to reopen. However, as a community of fighters, the team here did not let this slow them down. They have done everything possible to keep the studios viable during this time and are making sure that their community will be safe to gather again soon once things return to normal.
You can support Rumble Boxing Studio by heading to their Country Hills or 17th Avenue S.W. location to try out a class. They have expanded their online presence to include virtual classes and both physical locations are fully set up for social distancing to ensure the safety of their community. Experience the vibe for yourself, as boxing is truly for everyone. We imagine everyone could use the chance to hit a bag right about now.

Rich and delicious, Village Ice Cream has been bringing Calgary its mouth-watering flavours since 2012. With three popular Calgary locations, these shops are regularly lined up out the door with locals craving a scoop of their favourite flavour in one of their signature freshly pressed waffle cones. With many classics like their earl grey, Phil & Sebastian coffee, and Guide's mint making a valiant effort, the secret weapon at Village Ice Cream is still their oh-so-delicious salted caramel.
The shutdown was hard for Village, as their locations are a frequent gathering place for Calgarians in all seasons. While their shops were forced to close for three months this spring, the company was able to pivot and offer contactless curbside pickup with a new system that helped maintain a bit of revenue and allowed them to retain some of their incredible staff. COVID-19 has been a challenging time for the team at Village Ice Cream, but they're grateful to be back in action with in-person scoop service and they can't thank their community enough for the ongoing support through these uncharted waters.
Now that all three Calgary locations are open to the public once again, pick your favourite and go meet your friends for a scoop or two of your Village Ice Cream favourites. At this time, Village is not able to offer indoor seating, flavour sampling or cash transactions to ensure the safety of its patrons and staff, so they appreciate your understanding and their hearts go out to all who are pushing through during this time. #supportlocal #becausecalgary #calgary
Celebrating the 2020 Winner of Best Indian Restaurant today - this is a spot you need to put on your list for a date night out in #yyc!
Serving up authentic Indian dishes from the heart of 17th Avenue S.W. since 2017, Calcutta Cricket Club has won the hearts of many Calgarians. Famous for their kati rolls, saucy curries and exquisite cocktails, this modern restaurant perfectly blends familiar and daring ingredients to challenge you with something new. Calcutta was named one of Canada's Top 100 restaurants, and after trying their unique take on butter chicken masala, you'll see why.
Shutting down business for several months was challenging from all perspectives: operational, financial, resources as well as health and safety. However, the biggest challenge for the team here at Calcutta Cricket Club was the emotional roller coaster they've been on since the start of the city's shutdown, never sure what's going to happen in the next few days, weeks or months. Now, the restaurant has regrouped and reopened under completely different circumstances, a new challenge in itself, but the team at Calcutta are happy to welcome you back.
Now open for dine-in, online orders, takeout and delivery, Calcutta Cricket Club is ready to serve you once again Calgary. Head on down to 17th Avenue and enjoy their dining room, the modern vibe and their delicious food for your next meal out. #supportlocal #becausecalgary #calgary

Meet Calgary's Best DJ 🎵
Named one of Calgary's most prolific club DJs by Beatroute Magazine, DJ Kav absolutely loves making people dance with his upbeat tunes. For all those club-goers, he is one of Canada's top DJs who has travelled the country and internationally to spread his passion with a growing fanbase. For all those radio listeners, you may recognize DJ Kav from his role at 90.3 AMP Radio where he has held Calgary's No. 1 mix show for over a decade. The key to his DJ success is his versatility and ability to “feel” the energy of the people in the room.
As the outbreak of COVID-19 cancelled all future shows, DJ Kav has been unable to play for his fans, but he is strongly looking forward to the next phase. He has used this time to regroup and follow the creative process with two new remixes, released in June, that you can find on his website – “Be Kind” and “Rockstar” – along with three others this past February.
During this time, you can support DJ Kav by staying up-to-date on his remixes as well as when shows will be returning. In the meantime, you can follow him on social media channels to see what he gets up to in his day-to-day life.

If you haven't been to The Livery Shop, this cozy store located in Inglewood is your one-stop-shop for locally made goods, clothing and accessories. Priding itself in offering products made by independent artisans, you'll find unique jewellery not seen elsewhere, like trendy studs, pretty hair clips, gold bracelets and chunky rings. Above all, The Livery Shop attributes its success to providing exceptional customer service to each and every visitor since they opened in 2014.
The owners made the difficult decision to close up shop on March 17th and focus their efforts online. Their office at the back of the store normally has three teams operating in the space: CoutuKitsch, Camp Brand Goods as well as their own. The teams have had to maintain a schedule to encourage social distancing in the office which has slowed down operations, however they continue to work well together during a challenging time.
You can support The Livery Shop by visiting their website to shop all things local online. They offer delivery within city limits for online orders, as well as curbside pickup if you're located in Calgary. More importantly, tell your friends about the Best Jewellery Store in Calgary so they too can check it out. #supportlocal #becausecalgary
Congrats to the 2020 Best Brewery Winner
Brewing 37 tasty craft beers since 2011 with local ingredients, Village Brewery is a must-try in Calgary. With a focus on supporting their neighbours and the arts, Village aims to gather community, whether that's around a table to drink a beer or at an event where they are serving up their delicious brews. It takes a village to make this place run, so 10 per cent of their bottom line goes straight back into the community.
Since so much of this business rests on the ability to gather people and spend time together, the COVID-19 shutdown was difficult for the Village team and their customers. Not being able to interact and share in the usual ways was challenging for everyone. The brewery did start an initiative called “Spread Cheers, Send Beers” during quarantine, where the team encouraged people to purchase beer online and send it to a friend in need. The beer was an added perk, but Village Brewery really wanted to demonstrate the importance of reaching out and staying socially connected during times of physical distancing.
During this time, you can support Village Brewery by, you guessed it, drinking local beer. The brewery offers home delivery, so check out their online store and order your favourite beers right to your doorstep. The Village taproom is currently closed, but their retail store remains open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.
