Meet Marshall Ireland '28, a social work major from Rochester, New Hampshire who traded a path in biochemistry for one rooted in compassion, advocacy, and human connection.
Read more about Marshall's UNH experience in their own words:
๐ฌ I chose social work because I wanted to be part of something bigger than myself. Everyone deserves to have someone to look to that they can see themselves in.
I've also found an incredible community through North East Passage (NEP), UNH's adaptive sports and recreation program. My freshman year, I tried adaptive sled skating for the first time and immediately fell in love. I grew up loving ice skating and hockey, so finding a way to do that with less pain was a gift. Now, any time NEP brings out the sleds at open skates, I love watching new people try it and seeing the joy on their faces as they find their footing.
After graduating, I plan to earn my Child Life Specialist Certification, a path UNH has made possible through its child life minor and partnership with The Elliot hospital in Manchester. I can't wait to see where it leads.
Thanks for sharing your story with us, Marshall! ๐

Meet Anya Raetsch '26, an applied mathematics major from Haddon Heights, New Jersey, who came to UNH ready to embrace the unexpected and found a strong community.
Read more about Anya's UNH experience in her own words:
๐ฌ I chose applied mathematics because I knew I wanted to pursue something in STEM, but I didn't want to do engineering or anything too science-heavy. Applied math checked every box: interesting classes, a wide variety of career options, and best of all, no labs.
The place where I've found my deepest sense of community, though, is Wildcat Dance Crew, UNH's all-female, student-run hip hop team. I walked into my first practice as a freshman absolutely terrified. Now, I'm on the executive board as treasurer and outreach chair, I've choreographed alongside one of my best friends and I've built a circle of people who will support me no matter what.
As for what comes next, I'm still figuring it out. Recently, the idea of obtaining a PhD in order to become a collegiate professor has been incredibly tempting. Working at the UNH Mathematics Center and as a Learning Assistant for calculus has shown me how much I love building connections with students and watching them have that "a-ha" moment. The introductory years at college are so important to individual growth, and to be able to have an impact on the lives of individuals through math now seems like a dream.
Thanks for sharing your story with us, Anya! ๐

Course Spotlight: Techniques in Plant Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology
In this course, students learn the fundamentals of plant genetic engineering through hands-on experiments. They build recombinant DNA and design CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing strategies, gaining experience with the same tools used in modern plant biotechnology.
On this day in class, students isolated DNA from the tomato genome, learning how to extract and prepare high-quality genetic material for experiments. In the following weeks, they build on these skills by working with RNA and connecting lab work back to concepts from lectures.
Throughout the course, students design and carry out their own experiments. They analyze plant genes using bioinformatics tools, perform PCR, and explore how gene editing can be used to modify plant traits.
Students enjoy combining hands-on lab work with lectures, building experiments from scratch, and seeing how the concepts they learn in class connect to real biotechnology applications.
These skills prepare students for careers in plant science, biotechnology, and food systems. They also build a strong foundation in molecular techniques that can be applied across many fields.
This advanced course is a great fit for students with a background in genetics or molecular biology who are interested in hands-on lab experience and real-world problem solving.
