EN // Happy Birthday KSK! On 26 May 1981, the Bundestag passed the Artists‘ Social Insurance Act – a unique model that has secured self-employed artists in health, long-term care and pension insurance ever since.
But our study ‚Precarious Capital, Creative Existences‘ shows where the system is reaching its limits:
🧨 Those who rely on side jobs alongside their art risk losing their KSK protection
🧨 Those in part-time employment are not considered ‚primarily‘ artistically active – and fall through the cracks 🧨 The median expected pension is just €381 per month – far below the at-risk-of-poverty threshold
🧨 Stipends and grants do not count as income and therefore do not strengthen pension entitlements

Kuehn & Corrigan (2013) call this Hope Labor: the normalisation of unpaid or underpaid work in creative professions, in the hope of recognition, visibility, and the big breakthrough.
Our spokesperson Frauke Boggasch never tires of referencing this term – because our study shows how this logic continues to shape Berlin-based visual artists today:
65.1% work out of passion and inner drive. Median annual income: €6,000. 22.2% took no holiday.
🆘 This is not an individual problem. This is a structural failure!

EN // We are pleased to introduce Sarah Stührenberg as the future co-managing director of the non-profit organization kulturwerk GmbH—and will ask the general meeting this fall to approve her appointment as managing director of bbk berlin as well.
Sarah Stührenberg impressed the selection committee with her openness, vision, and experience: through her involvement in the Berlin Cultural Promotion Act and her many years of work at LAFT Berlin, she is exceptionally well-connected within Berlin’s cultural landscape.
Together with Egon Schröder (kulturwerk GmbH) and Michael Nittel (bildungswerk GmbH), the management of bbk berlin’s subsidiaries will in future be the responsibility of three people.

Vielfalt in der Kunst und Kultur steht in einem Spannungsverhältnis zwischen demokratisch orientiertem künstlerischen Engagement und zunehmenden Anfeindungen, Diffamierungen sowie organisierten Desinformationskampagnen.
Nichtsdestotrotz geht aus unserer Studie „Prekäre Hauptstadt, Kreative Existenzen“ hervor:
65,1% der befragten Berliner Bildenden Künstler*innen arbeiten aus Leidenschaft und gesellschaftlichem Antrieb.
42,6% wollen Wissen, Werte und gesellschaftspolitische Themen fördern.
36,4% leisten einen Beitrag zu Toleranz und Offenheit.
Auch interessant:
46,3% sind zusätzlich zu ihrem Beruf als Bildende Künstler*innen ehrenamtlich tätig. Und das bei einem medianen Jahreseinkommen von 6.000 €!
Kunst ist Vielfalt.
Kunst ist Gemeinwohlleistung.
Und Kunst wird gerade von denjenigen angegriffen, die Vielfalt als Bedrohung sehen.

Diversity in art and culture exists in a state of tension between democratically oriented artistic engagement and increasing hostility, defamation, and organised disinformation campaigns.
Nevertheless, our study ‚Precarious Capital, Creative Existences‘ shows:
65.1% of surveyed Berlin-based visual artists work out of passion and a sense of social responsibility.
42.6% want to foster knowledge, values, and socio-political issues.
36.4% contribute to tolerance and openness.
Also worth noting:
46.3% are additionally engaged in voluntary work – on top of their work as visual artists. And this with a median annual income of €6,000!
Art is diversity.
Art is a contribution to the common good.
And art is being attacked by those who see diversity as a threat.

Die Berliner Kulturlandschaft bringt sich aktiv in den Wahlkampf zur Berlinwahl 2026 ein.
Mit der Kampagne #deinestimmefürkultur fordern Kulturakteur*innen, Einrichtungen, Verbände und Initiativen die Politik auf, Kultur wieder zu einem zentralen politischen Thema der Stadt zu machen.
Unter dem Leitgedanken #berlinistkultur macht die Kampagne deutlich:
Kultur ist kein Luxus, sondern demokratischer Raum, gesellschaftlicher Motor und prägender Teil der Berliner Identität.
Gleichzeitig stehen viele kulturelle Einrichtungen und Akteur*innen zunehmend unter Druck - durch steigende Kosten, unsichere Förderstrukturen, den Verlust kultureller Räume und prekäre Arbeitsbedingungen.
Kulturakteur*innen aus mehr als 480 Berliner Institutionen und Organisationen haben bislang die gemeinsame Erklärung unterschrieben.
Zusammen richten sie zentrale Forderungen an die Politik (siehe Slide 4).
Im Rahmen der Kampagne werden Wahlprüfsteine zahlreicher Berliner Kulturakteur*innen gebündelt und veröffentlicht.
Zudem werden auf der Kampagnenplattform die kulturpolitischen Positionen von Kandidierenden sichtbar gemacht.
Höhepunkt der Initiative sind die zwei berlinweiten Aktionswochen vom 10. bis 16. Juni sowie vom 2. bis 8. September 2026.
In Aktionen und Veranstaltungen machen alle an der Kampgane Beteiligten die Vielfalt der Berliner Kultursichtbar und fordern von der Politik ein klares Bekenntnis zur Zukunft der Berliner Kultur.
