The story of the life and music of a pop superstar and a kaleidoscopic window into fame, homophobia, the 80s and 90s, creative genius, and addiction, revealing why the love for George Michael has only grown in the years since his tragic death on Christmas Day 2016.
There is no shortage of earnest books about the cultural significance of musicians like David Bowie, Bob Dylan, and John Lennon. But George Michael does not attract such attention. The music he produced is not generally deemed worthy of serious analysis, the man considered more noteworthy as a celebrity than a cultural figure. Yet such dismissals overlook how Michael’s life and work broke extraordinary boundaries and, in so doing, helped define an era.
A second generation immigrant and child of a Greek-Cypriot restaurateur, Michael could barely read music, and was not trained on any instrument, yet would compose hit songs in a single afternoon and play nearly every instrument on recordings that have reached totemic status. He had the rare ability to master both rock and R&B; and was, following Freddie Mercury’s death, seriously considered as a replacement frontman for Queen.
For many he became a symbol of eighties excess, played benefit gigs for miners and nurses, and was a prolific secret philanthropist. He had massive pop hits sometimes without any promotion at all, even after launching one of the most aggressive court cases against a record company in pop history. He was a teen crush for millions of girls, and stayed in the closet due to intense homophobia from his father and the media, but then became an impassioned campaigner for gay rights. A large part of his audience was suburban, middle-aged, female, and white, yet some of his most famous tunes were essentially R&B pop songs about casual sex in the city. He was wildly popular, at times ridiculed in the press, and fêted by some of the toughest critics, often simultaneously.
A deeply personal engagement with the life & music of George Michael,it
offers a colorful, insightful story on immigration, homophobia, and fame; the glorious eras of the 80s and 90s.
The United States moved into Afghanistan in 2001, chasing out Osama bin Laden as well as the Taliban from power. Twenty years later, it pulled out of Afghanistan and the Taliban returned to Kabul! The Afghanistan government, too, safely vanished hours before the Taliban entered the city. What was the trajectory of this bizarre turn of events? Did the US achieve the original goals of its operation in Afghanistan? Why did it take twenty years to end the war on terror here when it could finish this in Iraq in about eight years? Did the Taliban play a role in helping the US achieve its goals? How is Taliban 2.0 different from Taliban 1.0?
Apart from such vexing questions, Glocal Terror in South Asia: Tracing the Roots in Geopolitics and the Tragedy of Afghanistan explores the ‘silent’ upgradation of a local Afghan jihad against the Soviet Union with the mobilization of Arabs into the theatre. The ensuing geopolitics created the conditions for the rise of a global jihad from the Af-Pak region. Osama bin Laden founded Al Qaeda in Peshawar and its allies sprang up across South Asia and far beyond, sometimes even with the support of state actors. The destiny of Afghanistan and South Asia changed forever. And fault lines within South Asia deepened further.
The story, though, is not over yet since the region and the larger world have now entered a phase of greater insecurity and instability.
In Glocal Terror in South Asia, Anju Gupta, a well-known commentator on security matters, analyses the course of events from the late 1970s onwards that led us to this point, and predicts potential black swan events that the region, and the world, should pay heed to.
Bahrisons: Chronicle of a Bookshop traces their lives from the refugee camps of 1947, to a small shop in Khan Market in 1953, and onwards to the beloved institution that has shaped the reading culture of India for over seventy years.
Written as a collaboration between Anuj Bahri and Aanchal Malhotra, father and a daughter, the second and third generation, it is both a family story and the chronicle of a bookshop that has been home to countless readers across time.
The original Bahrisons Booksellers that opened its doors 71 years ago in Khan Market, continues to thrive. Founded in October 1953 by Balraj Bahri, a 25 year old refugee from Malakwal in present-day Pakistan, it was run in partnership with him and his wife, Bhag, who had also migrated from Dera Ismail Khan during the Partition. From 1978 onwards, their son, Anuj joined the business, and later, so did his wife, Rajni.
This flagship store is a haven for booklovers, nurturing generations of readers in Delhi and beyond. On any given day, its walls are lined with an active stock of almost 90,000 books, lending it character and historic charm. One can find Rajni and Anuj at the store every day, interacting with customers, supported by their incredible team on the floor. Moreover, every member of the team is trained to follow the original traditional practice employed by Balraj, the first bookseller, of working with a notepad to keep track of each customers’ needs, which was the first personal touch that set Bahrisons apart. Today, the notepad is still part of Bahrisons tradition, and each bookseller can be seen carrying one.📝
Among the seniormost team members at Khan Market is Mithilesh Singh, who joined almost 27 years ago; in 1996, and has catered to clientele including late businessman Ratan Tata, politician-lawyer Kapil Sibal and historian William Dalrymple. Mithilesh is known to even acquire out-of-print books occasionally! Similarly several booksellers, like Alam and Shafique, have forged their own clientele and can be reached on call, like a customer’s personal bookseller on speed dial ☎️
After all these years, stepping into Bahrisons Booksellers feels like experiencing literary history, where the past and present come together to inspire the next generation of readers ✨📚

In early 1948, living at Kingsway Camp, Delhi, Bhag and Balraj met and fell in love. While she worked as a junior clerk at the Ministry of Rehabilitation, he picked up odd jobs until 1953, when he became the proud owner of a small bookshop in Khan Market, which he named Bahrisons. Sometimes they would meet in the camp after work; on other days, he would bring a string of jasmine flowers for her hair from India Gate.
The couple married in 1955 and dedicated their lives to books. Through conversations with customers, publishers, distributors, authors, and other booksellers, Balraj curated a substantial collection. While profits from the shop went directly back into the business, it was Bhag who ran the household on her income.
When after sixty years of marriage, Balraj passed away in 2016, Bhag, in her 80’s, returned to the shop to take his place. She could often be seen sitting with a book in hand, conversing with customers and employees alike. Until her passing earlier this year, she remained actively involved in the business.
Over the years, we have grown from a single shop in Khan Market to multiple stores across India. The next generation, Anuj and his wife, Rajni, run the bookstores today with their trusted team. As Bahrisons turns a grand 70, we invite you to visit our bookstores in Delhi, Gurugram, Chandigarh, Kolkata, and Noida, to celebrate the joy of reading and writing.
