Sometimes the best thing for an orphaned gosling isn’t being raised by people, it’s getting the chance to grow up with others of their kind!

These little ones were fostered out to adult geese with babies of their own, allowing them the opportunity to learn natural behaviors, socialization, and all the important things that come with being raised by their own kind.

Wildlife rehabilitation is always about giving animals the best possible chance at a truly wild life, and moments like these are one of our favorite parts of what we do.
Baby bird season is officially in full swing around here! 🐣

Last week, we took in a fledgling Eastern Screech-Owl after he had been found wandering around a yard alone for several days without mom or dad nearby. By the time he arrived, he was a bit dehydrated and underweight, but is now receiving the care and support he needs.

Today, we admitted these tiny American kestrel hatchlings after a chimney was removed from a home, causing mom to fly off. The finder carefully gathered the babies and brought them to us for care. They are so young they still have their egg tooth, which is a small temporary structure on the tip of the beak that helps chicks break out of the egg during hatching!

As temperatures warm and nesting season ramps up, we begin seeing more and more young wildlife arrive each day. While some babies truly do need help, many are often best left with their parents whenever possible. If you ever find a baby bird and are unsure what to do, please contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator before intervening.

It’s going to be a busy season!
We are all fired up for program season! 🦉

When it comes to helping wildlife, education is of the utmost importance! This time of year we see hundreds of school kids and teach them all about wildlife, habitats, and why protecting our natural resources is so important.

We provide education in many forms! Looking to book a program either at our center or at your facility? Check out Looking to book your own personal tour for your family, give us a call at.
It’s been a week full of releases!

This beautiful Baltimore oriole made his way back to the wild this week after spending time in rehabilitation. Every migration season brings hundreds of tiny travelers through our area, each facing challenges from storms, windows, predators, habitat loss, and exhaustion along the way.

Getting to watch one take flight again never gets old.

After weeks of care, rehab, and time spent rebuilding his strength, this little American Woodcock was finally ready to head back where he belongs!

When he first arrived, we weren’t sure what his future would hold. But over time, he began showing us more & more of the behaviors wild woodcocks need to survive like probing for food, reacting appropriately to his surroundings, flying well, and staying alert & wary. His eye also healed up wonderfully! Exactly what we hope to see before release day.

Getting to watch a patient truly act wild again is one of the most rewarding parts of our job. Today, he reminded us that all the hours, meds, cleanings, and monitoring are worth it.

Every spring and fall, millions of migratory birds travel incredible distances across North America, and right here along the Lake Erie shoreline, we are lucky enough to witness one of the greatest migration corridors in the country. Areas like Magee Marsh Wildlife Area become a critical stopover site for exhausted songbirds, including beautiful species like the Black-and-white Warbler.

This little warbler was brought to us last week after suffering severe injuries, including a broken wing and internal trauma. Despite supportive care, her injuries were simply too extensive and she sadly did not survive.

Warblers are tiny birds, but their migrations are nothing short of extraordinary. Many travel hundreds or even thousands of miles between their wintering and breeding grounds, relying on healthy habitats and safe stopover locations to rest and refuel along the way. Unfortunately, because of their size and long journeys, they are especially vulnerable to threats like window strikes, vehicle collisions, habitat loss, storms, and exhaustion during migration.

Living in northern Ohio means we get a front-row seat to this incredible natural phenomenon. Every spring, birders from all over the world travel here to witness migration at places like Magee Marsh (which is only 30 minutes away from our center & happening this week!), where colorful warblers can often be seen feeding just feet away from visitors. It’s a reminder of just how important our region is for these birds, and how much work still needs to be done to protect them.

Even though we couldn’t save this little one, we hope sharing her story helps people appreciate the incredible journey these birds make every year. 💛
Boxes at the door might not seem like much… but to us, they mean full bellies, clean supplies, enrichment, and so much more!

This haul was made possible through the incredible support of our community, donations, and grant funding that helps keep us running day to day.

It takes a village, as they say, and we are so thankful to have an amazing one! 🦊🦉

If you’d like to help support animals in our care, you can shop our wishlist, donate supplies or contribute directly through our website. Every bit helps us continue this work!
🦇 Animal Sound Series: Big Brown Bat Edition 🦇

Despite their name, big brown bats are actually one of Ohio’s most common native bat species, and one of the most important! A single bat can eat thousands of insects in one night, helping naturally control mosquito and pest populations.

These tiny nighttime mammals use echolocation to navigate and hunt in complete darkness, sending out high-frequency sounds and listening for the echoes that bounce back. The little noises you hear in this video are part of how bats communicate and interact with the world around them!

Big brown bats are especially important because they’re one of the species most commonly found living near people, in barns, trees, attics, and other sheltered spaces. Unfortunately, habitat loss, human disturbance, and diseases like White-nose Syndrome continue to impact bat populations across North America.

Next time you see bats flying overhead at dusk, remember they’re hard at work helping our ecosystems every single night. 🖤🦇
