Here’s a closer look at the cavity closer detail behind a vertical nail strip Colorbond facade:
✅ 35mm x 45mm timber ripped down
✅ 90-35mm nail strip spaced max 600mm
✅ 70mm cavity closer for proper airflow
✅ Head flashing across the Thermotec windows
✅ Cavity closer up top so any moisture has a clean path out
Slimline. Clean. Detail done right.
Big thanks to Bowens and Performance Membranes for backing the detail that matters.

A rare one — for a short time only.
We’re opening the doors to a one-on-one, behind-the-scenes tour of a high-performance home here in the Macedon Ranges.
If you’re dreaming of a custom build, renovation, or extension, this is your chance to walk the site with the builder — to see how a home is shaped around our climate, and to ask the questions that matter most before you ever break ground.
It’s not a sales pitch. It’s a look at how the Forever Home Process actually comes together, up close.
Spots are limited, and we’re only offering a handful of one-off time-slots for people heading toward their building journey.
Let’s talk → send us a message to find out more.
When we started sharing this journey, it was just us — a family, a few job sites, and a belief that homes should be built better and built honestly. We never expected this many of you to come along for the ride.
So before we get back to work, we wanted to show you the side you don’t usually see. The missed lines, the laughs, the takes that fell apart the second the camera rolled. Because at the end of the day, we’re just family men who love what we do — and we’d rather be real with you than polished.
To everyone who’s followed, shared, liked, sent a message, or trusted us with their home along the way — thank you. Genuinely. You’re the reason we get to keep doing the work we love, right here in the Macedon Range and Melbournes Inner West.
Here’s to the next chapter. Let’s keep building something good together. 🏡
— Dean, Darryn & the Backman Builders team
Reclaimed red bricks have landed on the Banksia Project. Flagged early in design and chosen with our clients well before the first one was laid.
Every brick here has a story — decades of weather, a previous home, hands that came long before ours. That’s not something you order off a spec sheet.
For us, sustainability isn’t a finish — it’s a decision made at the table, early, with the people who’ll live with it. The right material in the right place. Less waste. More character. Built to last.
Let’s talk.
👉 Passive solar design in action at our Banksia project.
As winter creeps in, the sun sits lower in the sky. At midday, it pours through the highlight windows and big glazing—soaking into the concrete slab and brickwork.
Then when the outside cools down? That stored heat slowly releases back into the home.
Free warmth. No heater required.
But it only works when:
✅ Orientation is spot on
✅ Eaves are correctly modelled
✅ Thermal mass is in the right places
Get those wrong and the whole thing falls apart.

It starts at planning.
If your rafter or truss depth is not designed correctly, your insulation gets compressed, and the R-value drops instantly.
Once that happens, your energy report means nothing on site.
This is why we focus on getting it right early 👇
✅ Ensure standing heel height allows full insulation depth
✅ Avoid compression that compromises performance
✅ Coordinate with designer, engineer, and truss manufacturer
✅ Build to match the energy spec, not just tick the box
Because high-performance homes are not fixed at install.
They are set in motion during documentation.
This is what building right actually looks like.

Walking through Banksia this week. Site’s set up the way every site should be — materials in their place, ground worked, nothing in the way. Set up for durability, not just for tomorrow’s task.
The envelope: Proclima Solitex Extasana fully wrapped, ventilated cavity battened out, windows in. No gutters or cladding yet — just the layer that decides whether a home stays dry as a bone for the next 30 years of Macedon Ranges weather.
This is what we mean when we say weather protection. Not a single product. Not a single trade. A whole system, planned and detailed before a sheet of cladding goes on.
Thinking about your own build up here? Let’s talk.
From the moment you reach out to us, you’re not just starting a build — you’re starting a relationship.
Dean and the Backman Builders team walk with you through every step of the process. You’ll know exactly where your budget sits, what’s happening and when, and most importantly — you’ll feel confident and excited the entire way through.
This is what building a lifestyle home should feel like. Open. Transparent. Fun. And memorable from day one.
Whether you’re looking at the Macedon Ranges or Melbourne’s West — we’d love to have that first conversation with you.

Check out our Banksia project in Macedon, where we are taking high performance to the next level. While current Australian standards require a minimum 7-star energy rating, we’re showing you how to go beyond the basics to build a home that is truly high-performing and climate-resilient.
Here is how we are doing it:
* Passive Solar Intelligence: We have designed this single-story home to work with nature. A carefully modelled north-facing patio shades the home from the high summer sun while inviting natural warmth in during winter.
* Thermal Mass Mastery: That winter sunlight isn’t just for looks—it heats up our thermal mass, including a burnished concrete slab and feature recycled red brickwork, to keep the home comfortable naturally.
* A “High-Tech” Roof System: We are using a 12mm OSB ply sheathing under a Pro Clima roof system. This creates a taut, firm substrate that prevents water ponding and manages condensation, ensuring the most durable lifespan for the structure.
* Superior Ventilation: With an 8-degree pitch, we’ve integrated cavity battens and roof battens to provide the precise ventilation sizing required for a high-performance home.
If you’re thinking about building, don’t just aim for “standard.” Build for the future. 🌍🏗️
