But they don’t all feel like perfect days.
Skiing has been a battle with our first. We were those eager ski parents putting him on skis as early as possible (first time at 18 months)… and he hated it. Truly hated it. Right up until last season.
And now our 20-month-old? Mad he couldn’t ski this weekend. We actually regretted not bringing his skis just so he could scoot around and lap the magic carpet.
All I’m really saying is this: every kid is different. And skiing with kids takes loads of patience. Progress isn’t linear. Joy comes in seasons. And sometimes the “perfect day” is only perfect because of all the imperfect ones that came before it.

🔥 More adult adventures and not feeling guilt for leaving my kids behind.
AND
I get asked a lot if I’ll ever bring back women and family group trips. And the answer is: yes… in 2026.
Intentionally. With a lot of heart behind it.
Who is in for family camping or women outdoor adventure trips together?????
✨Create more than I consume.
✨Be more intentional about what we wear, choosing natural fibers over synthetics whenever possible. I actually started this in 2025 and now continuing into 2026. It’s felt really good to be so intentional with my purchases.
I’m always finding old wool sweaters at thrift stores and dreaming of turning them into kids’ layers. I really value wool - it’s a natural fiber, incredibly warm, breathable, and such an ideal mid-layer for winter.
I’m still a very beginner sewer, but we all start somewhere 🧵 I was so nervous to cut into this wool sweater….but a thrifted $5 sweater felt like the perfect low-pressure project.
It took maybe 20 minutes total. I laid one of my son’s sweaters on top, traced it with a little extra room, and cut. I even left the original sleeves attached, which made it way easy and simple. Then I sewed it back together and finished the bottom and sleeves with a simple zigzag stitch.
It’s far from perfect but it fits, it’s cozy, it’s wool, it can be used for layering or for everyday and I made it.🤍
Proof you don’t need to be an expert to try something new.
Don’t get me wrong, my husband is often there with us. But winter camping has always been a mom-led adventure, in every aspect. And really most of our adventures are mom-led.
And it’s interesting how differently that can be received. When a dad takes his kids camping or backpacking, he often is perceived as being “such a good and involved dad”.
When a mom does the same, it can be met with resistance (that’s dangerous or irresponsible). Or it’s just seen as average. Nothing special.
And I just want to say this: I see the moms who make these adventures happen. The ones doing the work, doing the planning, and showing their kids what’s possible. We’re raising our kids in the kind of life we believe in.

For loving sleeping in the cold and snow.
For taking my kids winter camping and even winter backpacking.
But this isn’t just some impulsive adventure mom phase. This is something that was modeled for me, something that was a part of my childhood. My dad taught me that winter wasn’t something to endure, but something to experience and learn from. Beauty doesn’t disappear when things get cold, it just looks different. Winter taught me how to be uncomfortable, even a little scared but to keep going anyways.
I also learned that winter doesn’t just have to be about skiing. If you don’t ski or snowboard there is still so much to experience in winter.
Now as a parent myself, I see how deeply those experiences rooted themselves in me. And I hope I can help my kids find the same joy and love of winter.

Looking back I am very proud of 2025. There were so many new opportunities and experiences.

And yes, Kotor Bay is incredible.
But if I had one piece of advice, it would be this:
don’t stop there.
So many people come to Montenegro just to see Kotor Bay, and while it’s stunning, the country as a whole is even more remarkable. The national parks, the alpine lakes, the mountain roads, the quiet trails. That’s where Montenegro really surprised us.
Whether you’re staying longer through a program like or visiting for just a week, I can’t recommend enough getting out of the bay and into the rest of the country. Rent a car. Drive a few hours. Follow the winding roads into the mountains.
We rented a car almost every weekend and drove 2–4 hours at a time and those days ended up being some of the most memorable of our entire stay. Montenegro is small, but it’s layered.
If you’re planning a trip: see Kotor Bay and then go farther. 🤍

But first I wanted to share one of my ✨NUMBER 1 TIPs✨for solo camping, backpacking & adventures.
✨Listening to your instincts, listening to your gut & taking action.✨(Runner up is preparedness, more on that later).
Our own instinct & intuition is incredibly powerful. I rely heavily on my instincts, my feelings, my gut reactions when out solo.
As humans we often discount or ignore our feelings & instincts. We’ve all been in some type of scenario where we had initial feelings about something or someone, but ignored it. Then later on found our feelings to be correct. Our instincts were completely in tune with the scenario or situation we were in.
So the challenge is harnessing that intuition & being in tune with yourself so you can take action instead of suppressing or ignoring.
Now this does get a little tricky when you are trying to determine what is instinct vs anxiety. I could talk more about my journey of separating the two, but ultimately the best way to master being in tune with yourself is practicing in your everyday life in everyday life situations. Below are also a few exercises / tips that can help:
1. Setting aside time to meditate
2. Reflect & listen to daily emotions
3. Practice mindfulness activities that use your 5 senses
4. Write down experiences of listening or ignoring your instincts
5. Practice listening not only to yourself but others as well
✨Then application for solo adventures✨
Practice hiking or maybe car camping alone & pay attention to how you feel. Initially, as you do solo adventures your anxiety will likely be heightened, so start small. Start with areas that are familiar. Overtime your body will adapt to doing solo adventures & you will be more in tune with yourself & your feelings vs. mainly experiencing anxiety from doing something new.
For me I slow down & listen to how I am feeling in the planning & packing phase, when I arrive at the trailhead, while hiking, when I pick a campsite, while I set-up, as we go to bed etc. I’m alert & attentive to not only my surroundings but to my body & feelings.
“how hard is it on the uphill?”
Adding extra weight is going to mean more pedaling power from the rider, especially on uphills. It’s harder than those kid free days, but it’s great training. ⬇️ keep in mind:
🚵♀️ I don’t do as much vert with my kid as I would solo.
🚵♀️ If you are starting out build up overtime. Don’t be discouraged by the breathless uphills. You’ve added weight & at times a moving weight (toddler) to your setup.
🚵♀️ I took advantage of shuttle rides last summer with my toddler & our mountain bike seat. I get maximum fun with minimum effort.
🚵♀️ Lastly, familiar with PWR (power to weight ratio) for cyclists? Larger cyclists can often produce more power cycling than smaller riders. If you are a smaller rider then pedaling uphill with extra / added weight is likely harder than it is for others. Just keep that in mind, especially as women & mama riders. Doesn’t mean we can’t do it, just recognize how badass you are!
“how much does a child sitting in front of you impact your riding?”
🚵♀️ Most riders have to slightly splay their legs as they pedal to accommodate the rider in front. Typically, I have found that the lower the mtb seat sits in relation to your frame the more pedal stroke interference you can find. (the more leg splay). Different seats have different seat heights in relation to bike frames. But overall this is not something that deters me from riding! What I notice more is not being able to lean forward when needed on an uphill, but typically I keep my uphill game simple with a toddler rider.
🚵♀️ On descents you can’t truly get into a ready descending position because of limited clearance between you & the kid. But I still lower my center of gravity as much as possible on any singletrack descents. As your kid gets bigger you may have to position your head to one side of your kids head as you descend. A temporary solution is using a less bulky helmet on your kid.
