I think our financial personalities are heavily influenced by how we grew up. While my spending is wayyy more loosey-goosey than my frugal parents, everything else is a bit of a mirror of them. Matt's parents are like him (naturally frugal), so everything works out for them because of ingrained good habits.
Do you reckon you were influenced more by your parents/upbringing or did you learn good habits on your own?
I've based this off our home worth $660k, but identical townhouses in our complex have recently sold for over $800k, so it's well undervalued in my spreadsheet. But I decided to only update the home value once per year (on 1st January), so it's another 8 months until I can update it π
The plan is to stop adding much to the offset account, and we'll slowly pay down the remaining $270k mortgage over the next 5 years. My goal is to have it paid off (or fully offset) by 2030, or when we're 38 & 39 years old.

He's always been a low income earner ($30k-$50k per year) but has been adding $1000 every year to qualify for the government's Super Contribution of a max of $500. Last year was the first year he earnt $60k - mostly due to penalty rates working on Saturdays.
Unfortunately his insurance costs $2000 per year out of his super (& $240 out of cash flow). We got life, TPD, income protection, and trauma insurance a few years ago through a financial planner, in preparation for buying a house and starting a family.
* When I say "we're excited" it means I'm excited and sent him a screenshot. His response was a chill, "oh yeah that's cool" π Anyone else got a partner that's super chill about finances as well?

Why $90k-ish? That's 1 year of expenses. It'd probably last longer than that, depending on the emergency, because we live a pretty spendy life and we can definitely reduce our discretionary spending if we needed. (E.g. no travel, no takeaway etc.)
Note: Yes, iIt kiiind of triggers me that it's not a nice, round number but I'll work on that π Should I withdraw $1,702 or round it up to $95k?
The second slide shows our other major sinking funds. The IVF fund is sitting there waiting for baby no. 2, but it doesn't get any money added to it anymore. The Car and Holiday funds both get $150/fortnight added to them.

I think one of the biggest things for us is knowing exactly what we usually spend and having a great overall understanding of our expenses. Without knowing this it would be so much harder to be confident in taking the time off work. The other big thing is that we do have a large safety net (cash in the offset account ~$145k) so if something unexpected happens then we're still okay.
We've both been open to talking to each other that if we're not enjoying being stay-at-home parents then either one of us (or both!) are welcome to return to work sooner than expected.
I am so, so glad that I won't be going through parenthood alone and that my husband will be there to share the load. I don't want to become the "default parent", and I'm hoping that by my husband taking extended leave it will make this more equal down the track.

Edit: I think I miscounted and will only get 14 weeks of school holidays at full pay. So around $3k less income from my work than in this image.
When I first started reading finance and FIRE blogs I saw people make graphs like this and could wait until I could make my own. I think it's my favourite graph β€οΈ
We'll see how things pan out from here, given we're starting parental leave (baby due next week!) and then part-time work. I wonder if it'll flatten out? Or continue to grow exponentially? We shall see!
My account is even named for this long-term goal of mine. It's pretty cool seeing a goal finally become reality. I know a lot of people get interested in finance and investing... but that interest wanes when the initial hype is gone. Many of you long-term followers, however, are similar to me and are in this for the long haul!! I hope all of your goals become reality one day too.
The biggest thing for me was starting early with investing, and trying to live frugally. I met my husband, Matt, when I was 28 and I'm so thankful he's naturally frugal. He balances out my spendypants habits β€οΈ
What Baby FIRE means for us is that we get to spend the first 12 months at home together raising our little baby, and then next year we'll both go back to work part-time. Life is flexible... we'll see what happens. But that's the plan for now. Wish us luck! π€

Using a zero-based budget helps me make sure every dollar of our income is accounted for and has a purpose. Using this method gives us control over my money and keeps us focused on achieving my financial goals. The flow-chart really helps me visualise where our money is going. Matt is pretty chill with finances & lets me organise all the finances.
I've been doing this method since my early 20s. It's not a strict budget, which is its downside.
Hereβs how I approach it every year:
1. Estimate Our Expenses: I start by reviewing my spending over the past few years & consider what's coming up in the year. Things to consider is fixed costs (like mortgage, strata, rates, etc), variable costs (like groceries, electricity bills, petrol), and occasional expenses (like gifts, car servicing). I also have long-term expenses like saving up for a new car & holidays. This gives me a clear picture of where our money goes.
2. Determine Our Income: Next, I calculate our total fortnightly income after tax. Any pay rises throughout the year are just a bonus.
3. Set Financial Goals: Other than our long-term savings towards holidays & a new car, our other SMART goal is to save $22,500 this year, which means we need to set aside $865 every fortnight.
4. Plan My Spending: I allocate our income to different categories, using Step 1. I always make sure every dollar has a job, so my total expenses equal my income.
5. Automate Transfers: My husband automates his transfers each pay-day, but I enjoy manually transferring... It's more fun that way haha.

It's essentially the same as #baristafire but it's driven by the desire to spend as much time as possible with my future children while they're young.

I've had my BabyFIRE plan for yearrrs, since my very early 20s, & I aimed to have $300k invested before I have kids. At a 4% withdrawal rate this would mean my portfolio would cover $12k of expenses.
I would love for both my partner & I to be able to work part-time after having kids! #aboutmebabyfire
