☀️ Just a few days before the Summer Solstice, we find ourselves at a beautiful turning point in the year. The Sun approaches its highest point in the sky before beginning its slow descent, reminding us that even at the peak of light, the cycle is already moving.
🎛️ This month I have the immense pleasure of welcoming onto the show ~ a long-held wish finally coming true.
Over the past decade, Babe Roots have become one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary dub, helping shape a sound that bridges soundsystem culture, deep dub, techno, bass music and experimental electronics. Through releases on labels such as ZamZam Sounds, Newdubhall and System Music, the duo have developed a language entirely their own ~ spacious, emotional and timeless.
❤️ The mix opens with a tribute to Baba Ras, the London rasta elder who sadly passed away earlier this year and who collaborated with Babe Roots on numerous occasions.

〈Newdubhall〉、主宰のUndefined、各ソロのデジタル・リリースをはさみ、2025年最初のリリースとなるのは、同レーベルから約5年ぶりとなる、イタリアのアレッサンドロ・ヴェリーナとアンドレア・ペリーニによる、モダン・ダブ / ダブ・テクノ・ユニット、Babe Rootsの10インチのリリースとなる。2017年にリリースされた彼らのアルバム『Babe Roots』は、いまだにリプレスされ続けるロング・セラーとなっており、まさに現在のリズム＆サウンド以降のエレクトロニック・モダン・ダブを更新する象徴的な存在と言えるだろう。今回は、両面で〈System Music〉からの2021年のシングル「Through We」にも参加していたWayneのダブ・ポエットをフィーチャー。A面「Mi Feel It」はヒップホップ的なビートを配したダウンテンポ・トラック。B面「Roots」では、UndefinedのOhkumaのドラムをフィーチャーし、特に彼らのなかでもルーツ・レゲエ色が強いトラック。こちらはセネガル出身でイタリアを拠点に活動するシンガー、Galasの歌がゆっくりと空間をたゆたうなか、Wayneのダブ・ポエットが淡々と言葉を紡ぐコンビネーションとなっている。どちらもリリックには、1982年にリントン・クウェシ・ジョンソンとデニス・ボーヴェル・プロデュースでアルバム『Mi Cyaan Believe It』を〈Island〉から出しながら、キングストンで非業の死を遂げたダブ・ポエッツ、マイケル・スミスがクレジットされており（どちらの曲名も同アルバムに同名曲があり）、その作品へのオマージュとも言える内容となっているようだ。両面ともに彼ららしいモノクロームな質感の、ディープな空間が広がるダブ・サウンドを聴かせている。〈Newdubhall〉の招聘によって、2020年に来日が予定されていたもののコロナ禍の到来で中止となった。今年、来日が予定されている模様だ。（河村祐介 / 書籍『DUB入門』監修）
