After our deliveries last week, we took the opportunity to visit the remarkable Kerselare Chapel in Oudenaarde, Belgium, designed by Belgian architect Juliaan Lampens.
Built between 1963 and 1966, the chapel is considered one of the finest examples of Brutalist architecture in Belgium, showcasing Lampens’ masterful use of raw concrete, light, and space.
What struck me most was the contrast between the rugged, almost monumental concrete surfaces and the warmth of the simple wooden chairs with their deep red seats. Combined with the generous use of glass and the surrounding landscape, the building achieves a powerful balance between strength and serenity.
Lampens, who was deeply influenced by the possibilities of concrete after Expo 58, developed a distinctive architectural language rooted in Brutalism. His work is characterized by sculptural forms, honest materials, and a careful interplay between openness and enclosure. The Kerselare Chapel remains one of his most iconic creations and a landmark in post-war Belgian architecture.
Although the chapel was undergoing restoration and was therefore partly wrapped, it remained deeply impressive. Its bold presence in the landscape and the timeless quality of its design are more than enough reason to return once the restoration has been completed.

Santa Maria Assunta Church
Riola di Vergato
Italy 1965-1978
Architect: Alvar & Elissa Aalto
The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is located in the small village of Riola di Vergato, about 40 kilometers south of Bologna in Italy. It was designed by the Finnish architect Alvar Aalto, together with Elissa Aalto and the Aalto Studio. The project was commissioned in 1965 by the Archbishop of Bologna, and the church was completed in 1978.
The building is one of Aalto’s very few works in Italy. Its architecture is characterized by monumental curved reinforced-concrete arches, asymmetrical forms, and a sophisticated use of natural light. The flowing white interior creates a calm and spiritual atmosphere, while the roof profile echoes the surrounding Apennine landscape.
The church is considered an important example of late modernist sacred architecture. Aalto combined Scandinavian modernism with an organic sensitivity to landscape, light, and human experience. The rhythmic sequence of curved beams visible inside the nave is among the building’s most recognizable architectural features.

This two-seat bench was designed by Friso Kramer for the German manufacturer Wilkhahn in 1967. It was developed as modular seating for public spaces such as airports, stations and waiting areas, and later became widely known through its use during the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich.
The design combines an aluminium frame with molded polyester shell elements and upholstered cushions. Like many designs by Kramer, the bench is characterized by a functional construction, efficient use of materials and a restrained industrial aesthetic.

Yesterdays walk and lunch at Landgoed Zonnestraal.
Sanatorium Zonnestraal is a landmark of Dutch modernist architecture located in Hilversum, the Netherlands.
Designed by architects Jan Duiker and Bernard Bijvoet, the sanatorium was built between 1926 and 1931 as a rehabilitation center for tuberculosis patients. The design followed the principles of “light, air, and space,” which were considered essential for healing at the time, and featured large glass façades, open balconies, and white concrete structures surrounded by nature.
Today, the restored complex is internationally recognized as one of the most important examples of functionalist architecture and is regarded as a masterpiece of the 'Nieuwe Bouwen' movement in the Netherlands.
