Psychartcult Turns Ten! What a lovely trip it's been, and remains. Carl wrote this wonderful piece at The Fenris Wolf substack about the 10th anniversary of #psychartcult

“My current project is editing together the 13th issue of The Fenris Wolf, which is a wonderful and packed issue. Good timing, too, not only because it is generally long overdue but because this process now coincides with the tenth anniversary of the first ”Psychoanalysis, Art & the Occult” conference in London 2016. Tempus Frigging Fugit!

Since then there have been two conferences, each of which was funneled into an issue of The Fenris Wolf: FW9 (London 2016), FW11 (Merano 2019), and now finally FW13 (Copenhagen 2022).

In-between conferences we have also arranged/hosted numerous events and lectures online, primarily via the good folks at. It’s been an incredible journey for me, not only because of the amazing experiences and meetings I’ve had in the ”psychartcult” context; it also brought me my love-of-my-life-wife, Vanessa.

We actually started working on the first conference together before we were properly a couple, but once we were immersed in the trenches of esoteric intellectualism in London (May 5th-9th 2016), there was no turning back. Some six months after that first conference we were married and manically working away on new projects together. Ten years later, not much has changed in terms of this mania!

The Psychartcult conferences especially have been magical for us. We are all by now so used to Zoom this and Online that. It’s part of global culture, for good and bad. But to temporarily share a physical space, as well as thoughts and feelings, is remarkable and inspiring in itself. The issues of The Fenris Wolf that anthologize the material presented are of course highly inspiring in themselves. But they can’t genuinely convey the atmosphere of being there in person, or, wait… perhaps they can?

There is undoubtedly a Psychartcult spirit as much as there is a Fenris Wolf one. They are both fiercely independent, open-minded, tolerant, and free-spirited in their desire to share unique material that we feel is relevant.
This is where occultism lives, not only in texts or symbols, but in lived moments where perception changes and something unseen becomes tangible through experience.

What was activated continues to move.

In the summer of 1998, I lived on 34th and 9th. I still remember the Saturday morning walks home from 27th Street. It didn’t matter that the sun was too harsh on the traces of last night’s makeup, or that coloured wigs were askew, or that the normal people of the world were just getting up. For kids like us, it was still Friday night, and we were beautiful anyway. And it didn’t matter where you came from: you were part of the moment that was Twilo.

All this was before bottle service ravaged New York nightlife—those “models and bottles” parties that smelled like Epstein’s B.O. The music they played was even more offensive than the stench of said B.O., if you can imagine. Never trust people who play pop music in a proper nightclub.

That said, I absolutely envy all those that got to go to the Twilo 25-year reunion last night, or those who are putting on some glitter right now for this evening’s festivities. and all night long? It could only be better if you had this freaky diva up on the box dancing (did they bring back Mike D to do the lights? I hope so. He was amazing!).

And I can’t believe ran an article on this! I was telling my mom about it on the phone this morning—indeed, my mom and dad came to see me dance at Twilo—twice! I introduced them to Sasha in the VIP. This weekend, I hope some of the next gen gets in there to see—and hear—what it’s all about. I know I learned to DJ from many nights spent listening to the best.

And what I remember most is dancing in swirls of blue light and watching over the crowd, looking across a sea of heads and smiling faces. I remember leaving the club and getting caught in the rain with a girl who was giving out glass marbles. I remember walking through Union Square Park at noon, still be-glittered and rhinestoned from the night before. And mostly, I remember being young, and that was the best part.

Photos weren’t allowed inside Twilo, but the first of these is from inside, with that glittering disco ball in the background.

I know I’ve been remiss in posting. It’s not because I don’t have much to share—or much to say, given the current state of the State. It’s only that I’ve been navigating a world of Lie algebras, chasing down the knowledge I need for my dissertation.

But I do want to share that I have a brand new academic article out in the Taylor & Francis journal New Writing: “The Muse, The Snow, Da Capo: musings and returns in the plays of Adam Rapp.” Yes: I’m bringing you some Red Light Winter just in time for the blizzard that is headed for the East Coast! This paper actually makes a rather good hot cocoa read. There ought to be snow.

It’s not your typical academic paper: I combine close reading of two plays by Adam Rapp, the legend of Takako Konishi (via Reel Bay by Jana Larson), and some ancient ethnographic journalings of my own…

But what people don’t know is that I wrote this as a writing sample for a previous round of PhD applications in Performance Studies. It was mid-pandemic, and I’d made it to the last round of interviews for the MA at RADA, which I had decided would be the last straw if I didn’t get picked. I was on set hand modeling for ELF when I got the news, and instantly started firing off emails to professors asking for recommendation letters…yet again. The next morning, I began writing this very article as my writing sample—because naturally I needed something fresh, with deadlines coming up in a matter of weeks. Sadly (for them), not one of those Performance Studies PhD programs accepted my application.

So you can imagine that seeing this article in print is some good cheeky fun!

For my Rice peeps, and others with university access, the article is available through the library under the latest issues of New Writing. It’s not even searchable under my name yet. For others, I can probably send a copy your way. But beyond all that, this is a story of resilience. Adam Rapp also had to wait way too long to see his work on the Broadway stage. I salute all those who are waiting for the world to catch up.

What does it mean to modernise magic, balance tradition and innovation, reconcile magick and mysticism, and cross the Abyss?

After the intensity of our fifth gathering, one word keeps echoing: Gratitude.
Gratitude for every single participant that was physically present at this edition of Occulture.

The vessel of this edition of the Occulture Conference was the Great Craftsman: The material creator, but not necessarily the intellectual creator. The words of Ayesha Adamo on the importance of speaking face-to-face, creating heart-to-heart, express the core of this intent.

While we dive into the archive of digital memories, our publications on social media will attempt to express the deep gratitude for every single participant.

Occulture is US sharing our magick realities.

Thank you

Sincerely yours

A glimpse back at some of Friday's lecturers. Part 1/2

This semester has been insane, and I haven’t posted much, but I just landed at #Harvard yesterday for the Spirituality and the Arts Conference, part of the Program for the Evolution of Spirituality. It’s kind of a trip to be back in Boston, city of my first kiss, preserved in the perennial springtime buzz of campus life. Spring is still spring, as ever, and I assure you that the pillars of higher education continue to stand just as unflinchingly in brick, staring down the political moment with aplomb.

All that said, my presentation is happening on Friday as part of a block from 14:30-17:30pm EDT, in the Garvin Room. It will be streamed through zoom online, so if you want to check it out, here’s a link where you can register (also in my linktree):

In my talk, “Headlessness and the Earth of Us: Invocation, Meditation, and Creation,” I’ll be discussing headlessness as an artistic and ritual practice, utilizing some ideas from Bataille to bring the creative and mystical concepts around to a discussion of sovereignty. In all, I leave you with this: We have sovereignty innately, as the sun has surplus to shine.

In spite of the crazy times we are living in, I’m delighted to be able to share this recent podcast interview for Stephanie Shea’s fantastic Patreon. Rejected Religion has become a staple among the academic esotericists, and Stephanie is one of the truly awesome people I got to hang with while at Universiteit van Amsterdam and on the European conference circuit. In this episode, I talk about a few of the things I’m working on here at and preparations for my upcoming conference talk at Harvard. We touch upon Bataille, Balanchine, Endarkenment and headlessness. Check it out at the url below or in my linktree in bio. 🌞✨
