I went to Amboseli last year for one reason: to meet Craig.
Standing a few meters away from him was one of those rare moments when time slows down. He was immense; a true giant, yet unbelievably gentle. You could feel his presence before you even raise the camera. Calm, grounded, aware. His wisdom was visible in every scar, every fold of skin, every slow and deliberate movement. The years he lived were written on his body, but most clearly in his eyes.
Craig was an icon. One of the last great tuskers, carrying ivory so vast it felt almost unreal and heartbreakingly rare in today’s world. Elephants like him have become targets, yet Craig lived peacefully, sharing his space with local communities, comfortable around people, and likely one of the most photographed elephants in all of Africa. Not because he sought attention but because he commanded it.
He was close. So close that you could sense the quiet power of his existence, the calm authority of a life fully lived. Meeting him felt magical and am grateful to my friend for making it happen. But knowing I won’t meet Craig again feels deeply sad.
Craig was a huge presence in Amboseli, and he will be sorely missed am sure. But he lived a long life and died a natural death. No creature, human or elephant, could ask for more.
Rest well, old giant. Your presence will echo long after you’re gone.
