At 4:30 this morning, the sun casts light, not shadow, at the bakery. It’s soft, it’s warm, it’s nostalgic even thought I’m right here. The sun is reaching its peak tilt and I, too, tilt my head at waking. Nothing about summer has shown me gentleness in past years, but coming back to Seattle as an auntie is life altering. My own auntie, my mama’s sister - we spoke last month before the baby arrived. We don’t get to check in often, with the time difference and the Pacific Ocean between us. “I saw the hot dogs and cream pan you’ve been baking for the farmers market,” she said in Japanese, smiling (I could tell). “And I thought to myself, that’s so Sako.”

Sako (Owner/Operator of Ayako & Family) and I had been quietly cheering each other on from afar for years, just two small business owners connected via insta. When we finally met IRL, it wasn’t planned, but it felt inevitable.
Within minutes, we found ourselves sharing matcha and, unexpectedly, tears, speaking about our immigrant mothers and the invisible threads of sacrifice, resilience, and love that shaped us. We talked about what it means to carry our ancestors forward, and the weight and beauty of building something with integrity.
There was an instant recognition, like we had always known each other. Two Scorpios, rooted in heritage, guided by a deep belief in doing things the right way, even when it’s not the easy way.
