If you have been with us since July, you have seen Suyana the Andean condorā€™s steady progress from short gliding flights to bigger and bigger flights navigating increasingly bigger challenges, such as blustery days. In fact, it wasnā€™t that long ago that she wouldnā€™t even take off on a windy day for her bigger flights, so we would keep it simple and work her lower to build confidence and fitness.

Many people might not realize that learning to fly takes a lot of practice and a lot of mistakes. This is why you will see baby birds on the ground this time of year. Fortunately, baby birds can handle quite a big bounce and will also flap-climb their way back up to many nests. But Suy doesnā€™t bounce. She is quite conservative with her choices. She has flown her whole life, but her flights didnā€™t afford nor demand her this many choices. She is doing truly amazing and itā€™s really cool to see her learn how to navigate these opportunities and to see a big ol freakin bird high up in the sky šŸ„¹
Stopping by brought back a flood of happy memories when I worked here through and after college. Susanne has always been an incredible mentor and source of the highest in integrity and care for birds. This cemented these values in my training and care programs from an early age.

This is Lehua, a 27 year old adoptable greenwing macaw. What a lucky bird to get to listen to a favorite song every morning played by an employee. And then for the first time ever she stepped up for him!! šŸ˜šŸ˜ there are lots of adoptable birds at the store and Andre and I pulled in a haul of toys to bring back to the birds. Excited!!
Heading back to Fort Collins to graduate for the second time from Colorado State University. I learned a lot the first time around, from how to free fly parrots with my friend and mentor Dean, parrot husbandry and breeding at Avalon Aviary, and equine surgery at my vet job.

This time around, the lessons were a lot more challenging, less forgiving, but incredibly rewarding. I honestly canā€™t believe I made it through the masterā€™s program and credit my ability to complete it to my team, friends, and partner Andre for holding me up the last 2.5 years.

This May, we are partnering with for our first Raptorthon fundraising event. You donā€™t have to be an expert birder, you just get to go out looking for birds of prey with your friends. Teams are able to start fundraising as soon as their group is set up, and there are prizes for different categories. Funds go directly to support conservation for raptors. Contrary to popular belief, vultures arenā€™t circling or following a creature waiting for them to die. They only scavenge on carcasses that already exist, not those close to death. Some vultures rely on visual cues and others on scent cues. Either way, vultures such as Suyana the Andean condor are social beings. They feed together, pushing each other around at the ā€dinner tableā€ and protecting the feast from others that have are joining in for an easy meal. Suyana follows along naturally with her human crew, ready for the next adventure. Itā€™s truly remarkable when a relationship is established based on understanding the natural history of the bird. Watching Suyana let more trainers into her inner circle is really rewarding.
Spent the day in the field with and ā€” working with American Kestrels through nest box checks, banding, and a lot of good conversation along the way.

Eggs in the boxes, birds in hand, and plenty of time spent sharing ideas about how we study and support the research and conservation of these birds across different ecosystems.

This work doesnā€™t happen in isolation ā€” itā€™s built on collaboration, shared experience, and time in the field.
