Qatar’s rollout of the legendary 2007 Laurent-Perrier Grande Cuveé Alexandra Rosé in Business Class turned heads for frequent flyers around the world, and many including myself jumped at the opportunity to sample this prestige cuveé onboard!
Thank goodness I managed to get in a pre-departure flute alongside my Lemon Mint, as the bottles uplifted from Doha ran dry before we even left the ground! Switched to the Billecart-Salmon Brut after takeoff.
Lunch began with a Cream of asparagus soup, followed by Kyopolou and Beef lukanka with sirene, a truly Bulgarian starter. Love when local dishes are catered out of the departure airport!
For the main course, I went for the Herb crusted salmon and tiger prawns with saffron rice, a rich and delicious option, not dry at all despite being served at 35,000 ft. This was paired with a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
Lunch service was rounded off with a white chocolate and caramel cake, filled with fig jam and served in raspberry coulis. Not to forget a glass of Port to close!
The journey from Sofia was completed with a warm Karak chai and Läderach truffles as we descended into Doha. This was by far the most impressive catering and wine selection I’ve ever experienced on a narrow body aircraft!

Continuing on from Sofia with a superb J-Class fare to Singapore, this was the final piece of the puzzle for me to say I’ve flown on every aircraft type in the Qatar fleet!
Qatar’s A320s feature two very different cabin configurations. One with dated recliners, and the other fitted with 12 Collins Aerospace Diamond seats in a 2-2 configuration.
Fortunately the seat next to me stayed empty so I had plenty of space to stretch out. Managed to get a couple hours of good sleep thanks to the lie-flat before arriving in the Qatari capital!

When I first got into the miles & points game, the zero annual fee British Airways Amex was my starter card, offering an Economy Class BA Companion Voucher for spending £12k in a year. So I did just that, and stashed the voucher away for the right time.
When my iPhone needed replacing, I bought the 14 Pro online through the British Airways shopping portal, with a tasty earning rate of 6 Avios per £1 spent. Not to forget, I managed to get £80 off thanks to an Amex Offer on my Nectar Credit Card. So a spend of around £1,000 netted me over 7,000 Avios, not bad.
And then finally, the right time did come around. I needed a one-way ticket from London to Sofia, and with cash tickets costing several hundreds, Avios was the way forward. It was to be 10,750 Avios + £17.50 for a redemption, but with the addition of the Companion Voucher, that was slashed in half to just 5,375 Avios.
So, I made my way over to Heathrow, dined and drank in the Cathay and Qantas Lounges at T3, flew across Europe, checked in at the Hilton Sofia, and took pictures along the way on this very iPhone - all paid for by the phone itself!

Dining from the Gourmet Tasting Menu offers the best of Indian flavours, with a great selection of sharing plates from the Tandoor Grill served in modern European style alongside excellent wine pairings. The Crispy Lobster in red chilli jam is superb, a personal favourite.
Although Tamarind no longer retains its One Star rating, the delicious food, friendly and professional service and elevated ambience here are above that of many similar London restaurants. Definitely worth a visit, would recommend over Gymkhana.

Dramatics aside, this was one of my best-ever flights in the QSuite and with Qatar in general. Service was top notch, champagne flowed freely, and Chef Aisha Al Tamimi’s signatures were on the menu.

Boarding as the sun set over Doha, the steward serving my aisle was quick to help me settle in with a glass of Qatar’s lemon mint and a flute of Laurent-Perrier Brut. We departed shortly after nightfall, and I opted for Afternoon Tea from the Light Options menu before settling in for a couple hours of blissful sleep.
I was awoken somewhere over Germany as requested, to begin the dinner service. A delightful wagyu roll with asparagus was served as the amuse-bouche. Still fairly full at this point, I went straight for the main course, which turned out to be a very sensible decision.
Qatari style chicken mashkool with daqoos sauce, served with almonds, sultanas and crispy onions. To this day, still the single greatest dish I have ever eaten onboard any flight. Packed with juicy, savoury flavours, like the best comfort food you’ve ever had.
Although the overall experience was less indulgent than most of my Qatar flights, it was cosy and comfortable, and I was well looked after by an excellent set of crew. When flying far away from home and family, sometimes that hits the spot best.

The 10,000-sqm indoor tropical garden features elevated walkways and surface level pavements snaking through some 300 trees and 25,000 plants, with a large water feature as the focal point of the garden.
Some may liken the overall design to that of Changi’s Jewel. Qatar’s ex CEO claims Changi copied The Orchard’s design before it was even built 🤭
Next time you’re on a long layover in Doha, or Al Mourjan isn’t serving any decent champagne, take a stroll up to the North Node and have a look around instead! 🌿🍃

No better way to kick things off than with free-flowing Laurent-Perrier Brut, several flutes of which were consumed before we reached cruising altitude.
Lunch commenced as we soared over Indochina, starting off with a punchy salmon and roe amuse-bouche and followed by a hearty Pumpkin and lemongrass cream soup.
I opted for both appetisers. Qatar’s Classic Arabic mezze is a must, I’m a big fan of the muhammara! A course of Seared tuna, prawn and scallops with heirloom tomato and wasabi peas came next. Served chilled, I found it a little lacklustre in flavour. Perhaps not for everyone.
Onto a delicious main course of Herb-crusted slow-cooked beef short rib, accompanied by gratin potato, carrots, asparagus and cherry tomatoes with beef jus. Tender and fulfilling, a great mains option! Paired well with a glass of 2014 Château Belgrave Grand Cru Classé Haut-Médoc.
Before dessert, an impressive international cheese plate served with grainex, lavosh and fruit and nut accompaniments. A glass of Taylor’s 20-Year-Old Tawny Port to go with. And finally, fresh berries with passion fruit coulis to wrap up a superb 6-course lunch service!
I was feeling a little peckish shortly before landing and opted for afternoon tea from the light options menu. The selections vary regionally, so this example was somewhat less traditional. As we descended into Doha, the hard-working cabin crew closed their inflight service with the handout of Läderach truffles.
An impressively extensive menu for this 9-hour sector, no chance of going hungry! Although I didn’t opt for them, I did appreciate the fact that several Filipino dishes were available on both the all-day dining and light options menus.

Menu cards handed out after departure. Love the retro trolley rolling down the aisle, with a fairly nice alcohol selection available.
After a couple glasses of the Duval-Leroy Pur Chardonnay Brut Réserve, I selected the Red Snapper Curry for lunch. This was accompanied by a salad and a rather disappointing “cake.”
The snapper curry was rather tasty, paired with a glass of the 2018 Howard Park Miamup Chardonnay.
I wrapped everything with up an MH signature, Teh Tarik.
