If for some reason the launch is called off, the launch window doesn’t close until Monday, April 6th so pending only small fixes, it could still launch this week. An additional launch window is set for April 30th.
The mission will take the astronauts to the moon’s orbit and back to earth, estimating a 10 day mission. The purpose of Artemis II is to validate the Orion spacecraft life support systems and SLS rockets for deep space missions. Similar rockets are planning to be used for Artemis iii (2027) which will land astronauts on the moon’s surface and Artemis IV which will carry the Gateway lunar space station for long term lunar exploration.
The aircraft, a Challenger 600 carrying 8 pax, attempted to depart in severe winter weather conditions when it crashed killing 7 people. A survivor thought to be a crew member is in critical condition. There has been no stated cause of the crash nor a timeline of events from any official source. The NTSB is working with the FAA currently to examine the crash and flight recorder.
MY THOUGHTS:
There’s a list of conditions called the “pilot pitfalls” and there’s a few that I think could’ve possibly caused the crash. First and foremost, considering this aircraft was owned by a Houston company meaning it most likely carried executives, is “meeting the schedule.” This pitfall is accompanied by others such as peer pressure, pleasing passengers, and “get-there-itis”. They all produce the similar result of either ignoring or downplaying dangerous conditions in attempt to get to the destination on time regardless of what the weather is doing. An incredibly dangerous thing to do and notorious for killing RFK Jr. and Koby Bryant. But maybe that wasn’t it, I am basing this speculation on statistics.
Regardless of why the crew chose fly in winter weather, what most likely caused the aircraft to crash is icing over the wings. When ice occurs on the wings, it disrupts the laminar flow of air, required to create low pressure over the foil. This makes the air turbulent and increases pressure, significantly reducing the airfoils ability to provide vertical lift.
The PL-10’s over-the-shoulder launch and large off-boresight angle significantly increase the close range air combat capability of the J-20. Furthermore, the PL-10 demonstrates how China can develop advanced AAMs that would increase its aircraft’s air combat capability. The J-20’s ability to launch PL-10s at targets located at its side and rear allows it to shoot down enemy aircraft in these positions. This capability is crucial due to the J-20's potential to engage enemy aircraft at close range during aerial combat, especially since the aircraft lacks an internal autocannon. The PL-10 would allow the J-20 to be effective at close range combat without compromising its BVR capabilities. For instance, the PL-10 would enable the J-20 to target enemy aircraft while saving its PL-15s and PL-16s for BVR engagements.
China developed the PL-10 to provide the J-20 advanced AAMs with similar capabilities as the AIM-9X, the IRIS-T, the R-73, and the R-74. For instance, the PL-10 utilizes gas jet thrust vectoring rudders and a datalink to receive information from the J-20’s EO sensors to give the missile its over-the-shoulder launch capability and its large off-boresight angle. These capabilities contrast with the PL-10’s predecessors, the PL-8 and PL-9, which only gave the J-20 the ability to engage aircraft in its front. The PL-10, however, eliminates these limitations and provides the J-20 and J-35 as well as other aircraft such as the J-36 and J-50, the ability to engage targets during close range combat.

Based on Du's background, the CCTV military video segment about the H-20's official unveiling in 2026 is likely accurate. The H-20 would provide the PLAAF the ability to conduct both conventional and nuclear long-range strike missions throughout the Indo-Pacific and potentially other regions. Du is currently the Director for the Network Research Center of the China Military Culture Research Assn and the chief expert for the Shanghai Military Civilian Integration Development Research Assn. He was previously a Senior Colonel in the PLAA and is a head researcher at the AMS’ Depart of Military Construction Research. Du’s background/roles enable him to contribute to and understand the equipment that the PLA is developing for combined arms campaigns, which is his primary research focus. The H-20 is one of the weapon systems on which Du provided guidance during his tenure at the Academy of Military Sciences and as a civilian analyst.
The H-20, however, would be China’s first true strategic bomber and provide the PLAAF the ability to conduct long-range missions in the Indo-Pacific and other regions. For instance, the H-6K has a limited capacity to operate in the SIC because of its range and is vulnerable due to its large RCS. The H-20 would have the ability to conduct missions in the SIC without requiring support from aerial tankers and operate in areas in the Eastern Pacific because of its refueling capability and long range. The H-20's stealth capabilities would also afford it increased survivability compared to the H-6K to enable it to penetrate air defense systems. The bomber's increased capabilities allow it to conduct both conventional/nuclear strikes on strategic targets using the JL-1, the KD-20, or other bombs.
