Sadly something really bad happened at the end. In 2009 many countries offered a bonus of around 2.500€ for everyone that scraps their, at least 9/10 year old, vehicle and on top buys a new one. In Germany this so called "environmental bonus", cost over 2 million cars their life. In the span of just 1 year, 5% of all cars in Germany were scraped.
The car that was hit the hardest is the, you already guessed it, Volkswagen Golf. Over 200.000 Golfs were destroyed, most of them were MK3's. Other cars on the Top 10 list are the Opel Astra F/G, Opel Corsa A/B, Ford Fiesta and Escort, VW Polo and the Renault Twingo.
Many of you probably think "Those cars are rust buckets and would have been rotted away to this day anyways", but there also were some pretty obscure cars, you wouldnt expect to be scraped for 2.500€. At least one unit of every single car listed was scraped in this procedure:

The cars on the list of this post are totally uninteresting for most people and they would probably never wink an eye on them if they see them in public traffic, but i personally are happier when i see a Toyota Previa or Fiat Marea than seeing a Lamborghini Urus or something.
Those are the cars i grew up with, when i was a kid there were thousands of them, and nowadays just a couple hundred are left and the get rarer from day to day.

In 2001 tho, a "real GTI" came out. It came with the 180HP version of the 1.8T, which is exclusive to it. Compared to the other GTIs it came with a 6-Speed instead of 5-Speed, Lowered Suspension, 18" BBS RC Wheels instead of 15-17" Wheels, 312mm Disc Brakes in the front instead of 288mm, Fire Red painted brake calipers, Chrome 90mm Exhaust Tip, Front Lip, Side Skirts, Rear Spoiler, Brushed Aluminum in the interior instead of cheap plastic decor, Recaro Sportseats with "Le Mans" Design and GTI stitching.
As you can see there is a ton of new stuff added, and thats not even all of it. The regular GTI with a 1.8T started at 23.500€ between 1999 and 2003, the "25 Jahre" Special Edition started at 28.500€ which means you get all of this for just 5.000€, which is a great deal if you ask me.
In total there was 3.000 Units made for the German market and 1.792 for the UK. The US also got their own version of this car, first it was the Golf GTI 337 in 2001 (337 was the original project name for the original Golf GTI) and in 2003 they received a 20th Anniversary Version. That is because the MK1 GTI released for the US in 1983 and not in 1976 like in Europe.

You are probably like: "This thing is horrible and a real Evo needs a 4 Cylinder Engine." And i kinda agree, but in todays times thats not that easy anymore for many manufacturers and i would rather take that thing instead of the next super generic Hybrid Crossover.
Different than most modern electric cars, this Lancer uses Hub-Motors, those are electric engines directly into the wheel. This has the advantage that you dont need a gearbox, differential and driveshafts, which saves weight.
Problem is that therefore you have a huge and heavy battery which weights more than the weight you just saved.
And the worst thing is the so called "unsprung mass", this is the weight on the car which is below the suspension. This includes: Wheels, Brakes, Wheel hub, Suspension itself and a few more parts of the suspension. If you save 5kg on the unsprung mass, it has the same effect as if you save in 25-35kg on the sprung weight. Obviously that means if you add weight there, it also has a huge effect and those Hub Motors are heavy.
But whats great on hub motors is the fact that you can adjust the power on every wheel seperately which increases the handling. Similar to torque vectoring. Also good for the handling is the placement of the battery, it lowers the center of gravity and weight distribution which makes the turn-in behaviour more agile.

The Engine is a SR16VEN1 developing 200HP from just 1.6 Liters. This was actually the world record for HP per Liter on a Naturally Aspirated Engine. It was later "beaten" by the Honda S2000 which also had 125HP per Liter for the Japanes Market. Currently the record is holden by GMA T.50 with a Cossie V12 developing an impressive 165HP per Liter.
To achieve those kind of numbers, they had to do much engineering. One important thing is their "own VTEC" called NEO VVL. This is, just like VTEC, a variable valve timing system but it was better than Hondas. On VTEC engines the intake and outlet valve switch almost on the same RPM, while Nissans NEO VVL switches on the high-lift cam profile for the inlet valve at 5.000RPM and the outlet valve at 6.500RPM. This leads to an even more efficient cylinder filling.
The original block is a 2.0 Liter SR20 one but they destroked it. This basically means they reduced the displacement on the engine, without touching the block, this is possible due to a crankshaft with short piston stroke. This makes it possible to make the engine being capable to rev higher because the bore:stroke ratio is really high and the pistons have to travel a way shorter way per rotation.
Power wasnt everything on this car, its also super light. It has basically no insulation anymore and most of them came without a Radio and AC. It was even available with steelies as most people swapped them out anyways.
As a Kid i always drove that car in Gran Turismo 2, and as iam from Europe, this Car was called "Almera" in my version of the game, even tho this car was never available as a an Almera in real life. The normal variant of this was called Almera instead of Pulsar here in Europe, but the VZ-R N1 Version was never available for us which makes that small mistake in the game.

The reason for that is because it was huge success in the US but in Europe people slowly changed their mind about sedans and the Jetta was called boring by most people and it was an old mans car. Thats why the third generation of the Jetta was called Vento and the third generation was called Bora.
The Jetta GLI tho, is a car exclusive for the US, the engine itself, the AQP/AWP, is a 1.8T 20V which was also available in Europe, but this US-Version had a Bodykit, Recaro Interior and 18 inch-BBS-RC-Wheels.
As you can see it looks absolutly amazing and thats also what most people in Europe thought, many tried to somehow get their hands on the GLI Parts, especially the front lip is really popular.
One thing that always strays around in my head is the fact your ass could catch fire when driving one of those. You probably think iam joking, but that could actually happen as the heated seats could have short circuits which caused the seats to catch on fire.

The normal Volvo V50 features the B5254T3 as its top engine. Its the same exact Turbocharged 2.5 Liter Inline 5 as the Ford Focus ST. Only difference is the software which makes the Focus feel a bit more sporty and due to the different size of the car they have small differences in cooling and air pipes.
This Concept tho uses the B5254T4 Whiteblock which is the same engine used in the Volvo V70R and S60R. Many people think that this is the same exact engine used in the Ford Focus RS, but that is just partially true. The block is the same but it was reinforced on the Focus RS because the original one tends to cracking cylinder walls. They also use a different cylinder head on the Ford, BorgWarner K16 Turbocharger instead of the KKK K04, reinforced Pistons and forged rods.
All of this gives both engines a difference in characteristic, i could tell both engines apart just by the sound, but iam slightly autistic, which explains a lot.
Sadly there isnt much information on this specific Concept Car i can give you, obviously it features a Bodykit, different wheels and a AP Racing brake kit.
But besides from that there isnt much information, there isnt even pictures of the rear or the interior as you may noticed.

What even makes this so special you may think?
They made this car 0.5 seconds faster from 0-60 and 14 seconds faster on the Nürburgring than the normal R26, without adding any power.
They did that essentialy with removing a HUGE amount of weight. A total of 123kg less which adds up to just 1.230kg, thats incredible.
The most obvious weight reduction was done with the carbon fiber bonnet which saves in 7.5kg, its really cool to see an exposed carbon fiber bonnet on a OEM car especially from the 2000s. I remember watching a tv show back than and they were critisizing that because it looks "cheap and weird"...Renault was way ahead of its time with that.
More weight was saved by the carbon fiber seats with an Aluminium frame (-25kg) and which is even more insane: side windows and rear window was changed with Polykarbonat ones that saved 5.7kg compared to the glass ones.
This is so over the top if you think about this car coming out of factory like that, normally this is an aftermarket mod done at extreme track tools.
They also removed a ton of stuff like the rear seats, automatic climate control, rear wiper, headlight washers, most of the sound insulation and also the passenger and side airbags.
To compensate for the safety they added six-point seatbelts and an optional rollcage.
But there is more than just removed weight, to improve the handling the suspension was improved and it has the so called PerfoHub front axle. Different to normal MacPherson-strut front axles, it uses an independent steering axle to prevent torque steer. On top of that it also has limited-slip differential and Brembo 4-Piston calipers.
All of this resulted in this car being the fastest FWD car on the Nürburgring at its time with a time of 8:17 minutes. It was later beaten by the Renault Megane RS Trophy MK3.

In the 2000s BMW were becoming more "mainstream", from only producing sedans and wagons they went on to enlarge their portfolio.
They did that with the 1-Series and also with the X5.
Pretty cool about those, besides the engine obviously, is the air suspension which has an entry mode you could activate via a button, this mode lowers the car and it looks absolutly amazing.
Back than the 2.2 tons were pretty heavy, nowadays a M5 weights 400kg more, thats why they had to use the brakes of the BMW X5 Security which is an armored version of the car.

In the 2000s Volkswagen offered a wide range of unusual and cool engines: 2.5 TDI, 3.2 VR6, 3.6 VR6, 4.0 W8, 5.0 V10 and the 6.0 W12.
In case of the Eos it came with normal 4 Cylinder engines but on the pre-facelift you also had the choice of a 3.2 VR6 with 250 HP and a 3.6 VR6 with 260 HP.
You probably wonder why they put the 3.6 in there for just 10HP more. The reason was that the 3.2 had Multi-Point Fuel injection while the 3.6 came with direct injection. Because of higher emission regulations they had to kill the 3.2.
And its incredibly rare, in Germany there is a total of around 550 VW Eos with the 3.2 and just 30 with the 3.6. If you keep in kind that Germany is THE country for Volkswagen, those are super low numbers and if you own one you should definitley keep it.
