🦉HOOT NEWS! 📰

Athena’s owlet is one talon-ted chick!😉 The baby is perching, showing off their huge feet, fuzzy “eyebrows,” and looks of judgment. At 6 weeks old, we are quickly entering that awkward branchling stage! 🪾

Today marked “weigh day” for this fluff nugget. Whenever we have babies in the care of our surrogate great horned owl, Eddison, we continue to monitor their weights to make sure all owlets are gaining and growing appropriately. We can confirm the owlet is thriving! While Eddison might not have agreed with the routine checkup, she quickly welcomed her baby back into the nest box.

We recently took in a few more owlets the same age and introduced the babies to their new family. They have now formed their own parliament…a highly respected council of feathers and fluff! Eddison quickly took guard in the front, while the babies huddled together on the upper deck.

We have our lineup.. the screech owl lineup!

This crew came in as all separate orphaned babies and have now been joined together for a new family group. Once again, there’s always one in the bunch that refuses to keep a straight face!

Eastern Screech Owls are always fun to have in rehab but they also bring the drama!

💪Tiny but fearless — they’ll stand their ground even when facing something much larger.

🗣️Extremely opinionated — lots of glaring, beak clicking, and dramatic expressions.

👀 Curious observers — many like to watch everything happening around them from their perch.

🚜 Backyard Bulldozer at your Service!

Our baby armadillos are growing up fast! We just moved 2 of our dillo crew to an outside enclosure and they didn’t waste any time putting their digging skills to use!

These babies started out palm-sized and now they are full-speed dillos. With an outside area lined with over 2 feet of dirt, they are allowed to dig and tunnel as much as they want. They are learning and applying all those armadillo skills with pure DUE DILLO-GENCE!

Armadillos are amazing and actually help your garden grow! Not only are they natural pest control that will eat all the pests like grubs, termites, ants and beetles…. BUT armadillos are aerating your soil free of charge! Don’t forget to thank your neighborhood armadillo for their hard work!

We have ROOKIES in the ROOKERY! 🐥

One of our personal favorite birds is the heron. They look like something out of Jim Henson’s muppet workshop when they are babies, have HUGE personalities, and seem to ride the Hot Mess Express throughout their gangly and somewhat chaotic development.

Herons often nest in communal breeding colonies called “rookeries”, a term originally named for the breeding grounds of rooks, a member of the crow family. This term has expanded to include communal nesting areas of herons, some sea birds, and even certain sea mammals.

We recently received three orphaned baby yellow-crowned night herons, so it looks like we are building our own little rookery right here at the center! Herons can eat more than 25% of their body weight while growing, so your donations will help keep these hungry, hilarious little rookies fed, healthy, and on their way back to the wild!

Today is the last day of our Spring Baby Shower, and the final opportunity to have your gift doubled through our
$20,000 matching challenge!
(Thank you so much to our anonymous matching donor!) Because of this incredible support, we extended our Spring Baby Shower through today, May 13th.

Every donation made will help us continue providing lifesaving care during our busiest part of baby season.

🌸🍼 SPRING BABY SHOWER! 🐣🦉

Some of our patients come with built in air fresheners. 🦨💨

We have officially taken in our first skunk kit. A little tantrum goes a long way when you’re ready for dinner time!

Skunk markings are unique to each individual skunk, and often compared to human fingerprints. This tiny one has some of the most unique mix of spots and stripes on its belly… it’s a Dalmatian Skunk! We think Cruella would be obsessed.

We’ve extended our Baby Shower through May 13th! You still have time to support our wildlife babies this year!

🌸 Happy Mother’s Day! ❤️

Athena’s owlet from the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center got a new owl mommy, just in time for Mother’s Day! 🦉🥰

Eddison, our surrogate great horned owl, has officially taken over mom duties for the little owlet. This baby is growing by leaps and bounds (with quite the personality), and Eddison immediately welcomed the owlet into her nest box, snuggling close and keeping a watchful eye on her new baby. And as you can probably tell from the look on her face, Eddison is taking her new role VERY seriously. She does not want anyone near her owlet!

This is one of the many reasons surrogate parenting is so important in wildlife rehabilitation. Having a species specific parent allows young animals to learn natural behaviors and develop the skills they need to truly become wild animals...and nobody does it better than Eddison!

We are overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of this community!

We began with a $5,000 matching gift, followed by a $10,000 match, and thanks to you, BOTH were fully met!

Now, we’re excited to share that we have just received an incredible new
$20,000 matching gift from an anonymous donor to help even more orphaned and injured wildlife in need. Because of this amazing support, we are extending our Spring Baby Shower through Wednesday, May 13th!

Happy Migratory Bird Day! 🪺🐦‍⬛

We have a full room of incubators just for our young songbirds! It’s probably the busiest room in our facility, as baby songbirds can range from being fed every 20-30 minutes… you read that right…🤪. Being a mom and dad songbird isn’t for the weak. Having to find food to feed your babies every half hour is a tedious task.

These Eastern Phoebe babies are our migratory species of the day! This trio came in as tiny hatchlings and have now grown into fully feathered and attitude driven adolescents.

Eastern Phoebes are small flycatchers famous for their tail bobbing and “fee-bee” call. They’re one of the earliest migratory birds to return in spring across Texas and much of the US.

Feeding babies keeps us busy and all their fresh insects adds up quickly. We need your help to achieve our $150,000 goal for our Spring Baby Shower.
