AFD Special Operations Rescue Swimmers, working alongside Austin Police Air Support as part of the Helicopter Search and Rescue Team (HART), trained with 52 different units and nearly two dozen aircraft, completing hundreds of practice rescue missions throughout the day.

The beloved Pease Park troll sculpture, “Malin’s Fountain,” was destroyed in a fire early Thursday morning. Austin firefighters responded quickly, but due to the difficult access to the site, after multiple attempts, crews were unable to save the structure.
Built in 2024 by internationally known artist Thomas Dambo alongside more than 150 volunteers, Malin’s Fountain was more than just a sculpture — it was a symbol of creativity, community, and connection. The only Thomas Dambo troll in Texas, Malin brought thousands of Austinites together and became a treasured part of Pease Park.
Now, we’re asking for the community’s help.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. If you saw anything suspicious or have any information that could help investigators, please call. Information leading to an arrest may qualify for a reward of up to $1,000.

Harold Kelly, a nearly 20-year veteran of the Austin Fire Department and a cherished member of our fire family.
Harold dedicated his life to serving this city and the people around him. Even while facing an unimaginable battle with ALS, he continued to show the same courage, strength, and heart that defined his fire service career. From his first symptoms in 2024 to seeking treatment in Canada earlier this year, Harold fought with everything he had.
Over the past several days, many firefighters had the opportunity to sit beside Harold, share stories, laugh, reflect, and remind him just how much he meant to all of us. He remained surrounded by the love of his family, friends, and his firefighter family until the very end.
Lieutenant Kelly leaves behind his wife, Melanie, and his sons, Colton and Christian. Our hearts are with them as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
Harold’s impact on this department will not be forgotten. His dedication to the job, his strength during adversity, and the bond he shared with his crews in Prevention and Battalion 2 will continue to live on through all of us.
Please keep the Kelly family, Harold’s friends, and all those who loved him in your thoughts during this difficult time.

The immediate, active threat, to our city has passed. Fire stations have ended their lockdown, the South Austin shelter-in-place was lifted, and two suspects are now in custody. Our thoughts and hearts go out to the victims of today’s senseless violence, to their families, friends, and to all traumatized by the threats of the day.
Austin firefighters join a grateful city in our thanks to our colleagues with Austin Police, Manor Police, Travis County Sheriff’s Office, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and every other law enforcement agency that assisted APD in the investigation and arrests.

The Austin Firefighters Association is aware of two separate incidents in which Austin fire stations were struck by gunfire, one late last night and another this morning, and multiple shootings across the city. In both AFD station shootings, no firefighters were injured with only minor damage reported to at least one fire apparatus and both fire stations.
At this time, AFD Command Staff has not changed the response model and Austin firefighters are fully staffed, operational, and responding to multiple shootings across the city.
“Austin firefighters are continuing to answer every call for help, just as we always do,” said David Girouard, President of the Austin Firefighters Association. “Our members are continuing to respond city-wide to other reported shootings and to care for victims. While our station doors are locked, our crews remain in full force responding to every call to serve our city and respond to our community without hesitation.”
“Based on current information Austin Firefighters strongly encourage all members of the community to be extra vigilant and alert. The investigation is in its infancy as the situation across the city remains active and is continuing to unfold. Our thoughts are with every member of our community impacted and injured city-wide by today’s events,” President Girouard added. “We are asking anyone with information to come forward immediately. Anyone may contact the Ausitn Crime Tip line and leave an anonymous tip at 512-472-TIPS (8477).”

While thankfully no residents were inside the impacted apartment and no injuries were reported, this call required far more than just putting water on a fire.
Firefighters immediately went to work securing the area, evacuating residents, monitoring dangerous gas levels, assessing structural integrity, and coordinating closely with Austin Police, Texas Gas Service, and building management to protect everyone involved. In incidents like this, every second matters. A gas leak inside a residential building can quickly turn into a life-threatening situation if not handled properly.
This is where the specialized training of Austin firefighters becomes critical. Crews used hazardous materials response skills to detect and monitor the gas leak, technical rescue and scene stabilization training to evaluate the damaged structure, and incident command coordination to safely manage evacuations and multiple agencies operating at once.
These are the kinds of calls most people never expect to happen — but they’re exactly why your firefighters train constantly for complex emergencies beyond fires alone.
