New projections from SF Travel show the city is expected to welcome 24.2 million visitors in 2026, with visitor spending projected to hit $9.9 billion — surpassing the city’s pre-pandemic record from 2019.
And a huge part of that comeback is being driven by major events, conventions, and international travel.
After a massive Super Bowl week, San Francisco is now looking ahead to a packed 2026 calendar, including 38 Moscone Center events, more than 674,000 hotel room nights, and global attention from events like the FIFA World Cup.
The recovery isn’t just showing up in hotel numbers either. Visitor spending supports restaurants, small businesses, arts institutions, retail, and nearly 64,000 jobs across the city.
In 2025 alone, tourism generated $655 million in tax revenue for San Francisco’s General Fund — money that helps support city services.
For all the talk about San Francisco’s challenges, the data is pointing in a very different direction:
More visitors.
More spending.
More conventions.
More international travel.
And more signs that San Francisco’s comeback is gaining real momentum.
As Mayor Lurie would say, let’s go, San Francisco.

But until now, they didn’t actually own the ground they stood on. That just changed.
The Bay Club dropped $65 million to acquire the entire city block at 150 Greenwich St., locking in three parcels totaling over 150,000 square feet, including a 130-year-old historic building, from LaSalle Investment Management. It’s a bet on San Francisco at a time when many are still hedging theirs.
What makes this move striking is the timing and the conviction behind it. Office values across downtown SF remain deeply depressed, yet Bay Club paid full price, roughly $433 per square foot, citing its proximity to the booming Jackson Square neighborhood and the AI-fueled resurgence of the city’s tech scene. Membership and usage metrics are at all-time highs, and the club’s CEO didn’t mince words: “San Francisco is our home, and we’re tripling down on it.” This isn’t just a real estate transaction.
It’s a 50-year-old institution planting its flag permanently in a city that’s still fighting to prove its comeback is real, and doing so with one of the clearest votes of confidence we’ve seen from the private sector in years.

Starting August 1, the de Young Museum becomes the first stop in the United States for “Treasures of the Pharaohs,” an exhibition carrying 130 objects spanning three millennia of Egyptian history. More than 100 of them have never been shown in North America. The crown jewel of the collection comes from the lost city of Amenhotep III, a site the size of which made it the largest known city in ancient Egypt, abandoned by the pharaoh’s own son around 1352 BC and essentially frozen in time until archaeologists rediscovered it in 2021. Those findings are making their North American debut here.
What makes this more than a museum moment is the weight of what is actually traveling. We are talking about golden sarcophagi of royalty, jewelry pulled from royal tombs, and statues of pharaohs who ruled a civilization so structurally sophisticated that kingship, religion, and visual culture were treated as a single inseparable system. The exhibition was already called sublime and solemn after its run in Rome. San Francisco gets it through January 2027.
The bigger picture here for the city is real. Cultural events of this scale drive hotel bookings, restaurant covers, and foot traffic in ways that compound quietly.

From the Mayor’s Office:
Mayor Daniel Lurie signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the cities of San Francisco and Shanghai, marking the 46th anniversary of the sister city relationship on the second day of his first international trip to Shanghai and Seoul. The MOU will establish a three-year framework to expand collaboration across arts and culture, tourism, sports, education, and youth exchange, while strengthening partnerships, connection, and understanding between the two cities.
Signed during Mayor Lurie’s trip to Shanghai and Seoul, the MOU builds on Mayor Lurie’s work to accelerate San Francisco’s economic recovery through the arts. To continue to drive the city’s economic comeback, the mayor has taken steps to strengthen city arts and culture institutions, partnered with the private and philanthropic sectors to contribute to downtown’s recovery, and launched a plan to accelerate the city’s downtown comeback.
“On the 46th anniversary of our sister city relationship, San Francisco and Shanghai are reaffirming our commitment to strengthening cooperation across arts, culture, tourism, education, sports, and civic exchange,” said Mayor Lurie. “Strong global partnerships help our cities share ideas, create opportunities for residents and young people, and deepen the connections between our communities, and I’m honored to be deepening our relationship through this MOU.”
The signing is another milestone of Mayor Lurie’s first international trip as mayor—visiting China and South Korea to strengthen San Francisco’s sister city relationships with Shanghai and Seoul, deepen arts and culture partnerships, and promote tourism to San Francisco.

Before that it was a Decathlon. Before Decathlon, it was just another retail box on one of San Francisco’s most economically battered corridors. That six-year vacancy chapter is closing, and what is replacing it is not another clothing brand or a pharmacy.
Museum of Illusions has signed a long-term lease on the 14,300-square-foot space and is putting $1.6 million into gut-renovating the interior into a fully immersive experience venue. The brand itself is Croatian in origin, now backed by Brightwood Capital Advisors, a private equity firm that acquired the parent company and has been using that financial firepower to plant flags in major US metros. San Francisco is the latest target. It is scheduled to open in 2027.
City planners and business groups have quietly accepted that traditional retail cannot anchor Market Street the way it once did. The foot traffic math no longer works for most storefront brands post-pandemic. So the bet is shifting toward experiences, the kind of venues that give people a reason to show up that Amazon cannot replicate. Rooms that warp your sense of scale. Tunnels that make the floor feel like it is spinning. Mirrors that clone your reflection into infinity. It sounds like entertainment, but the underlying logic is economic.
San Francisco is essentially running a live experiment in whether experience-driven retail can do what a decade of traditional leasing could not.
