This is why some people don't go camping! ๐Ÿ˜ฑ๐Ÿคฃ

Wolf Spiders are found across Australia.

This one wandered through our campsite in the evening, then as I was rolling up my swag, I found it tucked away under a flap of the swag ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿคฃ

As I was coaxing it towards a nearby tree, a Butcher bird saw it and scored breakfast. The hunter became the hunted ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿ˜ฑ

Bites aren't considered a problem but their size scares some people.

Do you know where Monty's Pass is?
The answer also has a wave that rivals Wave Rock but is not Wave Rock ๐Ÿ˜‰

It's a lovely spot on the western edge of the Great Western Woodlands.
From top you'll see farmland to the west and 'bush' to the east.
It's only 400km from Perth ๐Ÿคฃ

Put it on your list and thank me later ๐Ÿ‘

Located out on its own in the Tasman Sea 600km east of Port Macquarie (and 780km NE of Sydney) and officially part of NSW, is the once volcanic paradise known as Lord Howe Island.

It was my second visit here and I hope it's not my last.

The wildlife is unique with many endemic species of plants and animals.
For a Nature lover like me, this is paradise.

There are wonderful hikes to be had, the diving on coral reefs is spectacular and even a snorkel in the lagoon or feeding the fish at Ned's Beach will delight.

Maximum of 400 visitors at a time mean that this 14km sq island, of which most is rainforest, never gets overwhelmed by tourists.
There is a similar number of lucky residents but you almost need to be born there to be one of them ๐Ÿคฃ

For good reason it is listed on the World Heritage register.
It is a very special place ๐Ÿ’™

Put it on your list and thank me later ๐Ÿ‘

The hiking on Lord Howe Island can reward you with views like this ๐Ÿ’™

Mt Eliza is on the northern tip of the island and is closed over summer months because tens of thousands of sea birds arrive to nest in the cliffs there.

In autumn you can hike there and the views are spectacular ๐Ÿ’™

This bird is a conservation success story!

The Lord Howe woodhen (Hypotaenidia sylvestris) was on the brink of extinction in 1980 with about 20 breeding pairs left in the wild. These flightless birds - not unlike kiwis but nowhere near as shy - were confined to the two mountain tops away from the reach of the introduced predators.

A breeding program took place and raised their numbers to 200 but still precarious.
Certainly the removal of introduced wild pigs, goats and cats helped but numbers had plateaued at 200.
It was not until the baiting and e-rat-ication of rodents in 2019 that numbers took off and there are now thousands! ๐Ÿ˜

Swipe across to see them in cafes. They're like the Quokkas of Lord Howe Island ๐Ÿคฃ

They're now everywhere from mountain tops to your accommodation if you forget to shut the door ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

Nice to have a good news Nature story to share โค๏ธ

I had another great hike today and again I was dodging storm showers!

It only mattered if I was on an exposed headland or ridge but if I was under the rainforest canopy, the canopy was my umbrella ๐Ÿคฃ

The hiking trails on Lord Howe Island are well marked and amazingly curated with steps and other helpful things in place. So yes, there are LOTS of up and downs but they're usually steps ๐Ÿ‘

This viewpoint is Malabar Hill.
The cliffs below are full of nesting seabirds, such as Red-tailed Tropic birds, swirling around on the wind.

The coral reefs below are great for scuba diving, but that was a previous visit ๐Ÿ˜‰

Lord Howe Island is special ๐Ÿ’™
I love reptiles โค๏ธ (and there are no snakes on Lord Howe Island, which makes hiking less stressful ๐Ÿคฃ) so I was stoked to find this endemic and rare species of skink.

The Lord Howe Island skink (Oligosoma lichenigerum) is common on Norfolk Island and offshore islands of LHI they're considered rare on the main island, where I was. They're also not diurnal, so finding this rare skink in the daytime was a double bonus! ๐Ÿ˜

I'd like to think that since the e-rat-ication of the devastating introduced rats in 2019, these little critters might becoming less rare ๐Ÿคž

Another big change since my first visit in 2013 is the increase in the birdlife.

Lord Howe Island is indescribably special ๐Ÿ’š

What a stunning hike! ๐Ÿ’™

First I've headed uphill from Ned's Beach, that beautiful beach on the left.
It is steep but you are rewarded with spectacular island views as you reach Malabar Cliffs ๐Ÿ’™
Today was clear enough to even see Ball's Pyramid in the distance ๐Ÿ˜ฒ
These cliffs are not only precipitous and high, but every summer they host many tens of thousands of seabirds. Birds such as Petrels, Tropic birds, Boobies and Terns spend their breeding season here. It's the only time of the year that they aren't flying. ๐Ÿ˜ฒ

From Malabar I headed along the cliff tops to Kim's Lookout for more great views before descending to Settlement Beach.

Lord Howe Island is special ๐Ÿ’™

If you haven't been, put it on your list and thank me later ๐Ÿ‘

Check out my story for a panoramic video view from Malabar cliff top ๐Ÿ’™
