I’m not a fan of the “never do this in your home” reels because honestly… do what you want. Paint the ceiling, don’t paint the ceiling, colour drench the room, keep everything neutral and so on.
The anti-spotlight brigade may be out in force against me, but give me layered lighting options in a room any day of the week. Spotlights, lamps, wall lights, under-cabinet lighting… I’ll die on that hill quite happily!

As soon as we bought the house, we had a really clear vision for the back garden: somewhere calm, functional and beautiful that we’d genuinely want to spend time in at the weekends. We’re outside constantly when the weather’s good, so creating a space that felt relaxing and easy to live in was really important to us.

It’s made us even more curious about what this house has seen since it was built in the 1930s - there’s clearly much more to learn.
Being under the flight path of aircraft heading to and from London, and from what we’ve since discovered, the local area formed a key part of the defensive ring around the capital with anti-tank defence lines and roadblocks, military camps and a nearby major ammunition depot.
We are going to dig deeper into the history of the home as we renovate, and will share what we find.

Letting the view lead, while the less-loved corners finally get their moment. We have a long road ahead before we can get to the fun part of building it. The whole subfloor downstairs needs re-levelled first - Paul will be busy! - but it’ll be worth every bit and we’ll bring you along for the ride.
