Vector halftone text effect in Illustrator:
Write out your text and open the Appearance Panel (Window > Appearance).
Change the fill to be a gradient of your choosing. The darker color will be the dots.
With the fill selected in the Appearance panel click the FX menu button at the bottom and navigate to Additional Effects: Phantasm > Halftone…
This will bring up the Phantasm dialog.
Change the Type: Sampled - this will use your gradient colors
Enable the Create Undercoat option and select it to be the same as your lighter color.
Enable the Clip to Object option.
Adjust the DPI settings - lower the number the larger the dots.
Change the Pattern if you’d rather it be alternating or radial halftones.
You can also use the Dot Gain graph to fine tune the scaling.
Click OK when you’re done.
Drag the text into the Graphic Styles window to save it.
As this is a live effect you can turn it off in the appearance panel, or expand it to be 100% vector (Object > Expand Appearance).
