Painting and Drawing from Life

Instructor | Jerry Weiss
Days | Monday - Friday
Hours | 6 PM - 9:30 PM
Tuition Fee | $489.25

This class emphasizes the study of the human figure. Students are encouraged to design pictures that will focus on the figure, while at the same time being attentive to the relationship of color and tonal values throughout the picture.

Light is studied for its effect on the large planes of the body, for the ways in which it models and clarifies anatomical form, and for its contribution to the richness of color that gives life to the figure. Students may work in any media. We will discuss the challenges of longer posed works through individual critiques and in-class demonstrations.

This class works from both clothed and nude models. Poses usually run for several weeks. More info with the link in bio.

Workshop: Five Heads in Five Days

Instructor | Richard Piloco
Days | Jun 22-26, Monday-Friday
Hours | 9 AM - 12:30 pm
Tuition Fee | $525.30

The quickest way to get better at alla-prima head studies is simply to do more of them. This class will focus on stripping away the complexity of the model. Using notan to find uncomplicated flat shapes on which to build structure.

Learning to shift between flat shapes and form based on planes is the stock and trade of a professional painter. Fundamental to painting our picture is a strong concept of relative value relationships. To understand and control values better, before painting we will practice mixing relative values for the simple shapes in each day’s painting.

This class will drill on this through 5 3-hour heads.

Drawing Nature - Songbirds (Workshop)

Instructor | Umakanth Thumrugoti
Days | Jun 8 - 12, Monday - Friday
Hours | 6 PM - 9:30 PM
Tuition Fee | $489.25

The distinctive calls of certain birds often sound musical to the human ear—hence the term birdsong. In this, in-person workshop, we’ll celebrate that beauty by drawing and painting vibrant songbirds.

Participants will learn to observe and illustrate species such as the Black-capped Chickadee, White-breasted Nuthatch, Indigo Bunting, and American Redstart. We’ll explore essential topics including basic bird anatomy, wing structure, posture, movement, as well as the habitats and traits that define each species.

You’ll experiment with a range of materials—watercolors, colored pencils, and pastels—while developing techniques that suit your style. The workshop includes demonstrations, group discussions, and plenty of hands-on practice. By the end of the course, you’ll complete a finished artwork for each featured bird, building both skill and confidence.

This workshop is ideal for artists with some drawing experience who want to deepen their practice through nature-focused subjects in a relaxed, supportive environment. If weather permits and participants are able, we may take a short birdwatching trip in Central Park on Friday.
