The garden spans 140 acres and is home to more than 50,000 desert plants. Keep your eyes peeled on the trails because there is also a rare crested saguaro on the property, featured in the first clip in this video, it is one of nature’s most unusual mutations where the growing tip fans out into a wavy, brain-like crest instead of a traditional column.
The garden is currently open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. and has five walkable trails: the Sonoran Desert Nature Trail, Center for Desert Living Trail, Desert Discovery Trail, Harriet K. Maxwell Desert Wildflower Trail, and Plants and People of the Sonoran Desert Trail.
Adult admission is $39.95 from October through May, dropping to $29.95 in September and $16.95 in the summer months. Kids are $19.95. The second Tuesday of every month is pay-what-you-can.
During the summer months I highly recommend going early so you beat the heat!
And if you think the garden is good during the day, wait until you see it at night. Every winter they host Las Noches de las Luminarias, a holiday tradition that has been running since 1978. More than 8,000 hand-lit luminaria bags line the trails alongside thousands of tiny white lights in the trees, and they bring in live music throughout the garden for the entire run of the event. They also host a summer concert series on warm evenings. The nighttime experience here is genuinely one of the most beautiful things you can do in Phoenix.

I am an AZ girl born and raised! Born in Cottonwood, AZ; raised in Camp Verde, AZ; currently live: Sedona, AZ. 🏜️
Occupation: I’m a full time attorney and have been practicing non-stop for over 10 years now! 👩🏼💼
Outdoor background: I’ve been hiking in Sedona since I could walk (hello Bell Rock Pathway). I’ve got 20+ years of hiking experience, outdoors experience, backpacking and adventuring under my belt. I’ve hiked all around the Western US, and also in other countries including Canada, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, Argentina & Chile. 🥾
Family: I’m married to my amazing husband Preston and we have two pups, Charlie and Cooper, who are in these photos! 🐶 🐶

Why I love being outside: I find hiking so therapeutic - the sense of accomplishment you feel when completing a hard peak, a long hike, or a strenuous scramble. I also love photography and find such a creative an artistic release in taking nature photos.
Why I’m on here: I’ve always posted hikes and outdoor stuff but I started posting educational information and leave no trace type posts when I noticed my favorite trails becoming graffitied and trashed. My goal on here is to inspire, educate, and foster a respect and appreciation for our public lands.
