In addition to the Denali Award recipients and Honorable Mention honorees, ASD introduced a special Extraordinary Service recognition to honor schools, departments, and individuals who stepped up during the Typhoon Halong response.
During a time of tremendous need, these employees demonstrated compassion, leadership, and unwavering support for displaced students and families from Western Alaska. Their efforts helped create stability, belonging, and care for families experiencing unimaginable loss and reflected the very best of ASD.

The event highlighted student success in academics, attendance, and engagement while also supporting a stronger sense of belonging and connection to school. Families, staff, and students came together to celebrate the hard work, growth, and accomplishments of these amazing students.
One of our students was riding her bike to Orion Elementary School recently looking extra fancy in a pretty dress when it accidentally got caught in her bike chain.
Thankfully, our amazing ASD Maintenance team was nearby and jumped right in to help free the dress and save the day!

The Service High School Jazz Band, led by teacher Christopher Lubken, brought home major honors from the Basically Basie Jazz Heritage Competition in Kansas City, earning first place in the 5A division and being named Outstanding Jazz Ensemble while competing against 76 bands from across the nation.
The competition celebrates the legendary sound and swing style of Count Basie and recognizes ensembles that best capture the spirit and energy of the Kansas City jazz tradition.

Competing at the prestigious Basically Basie Jazz Heritage Competition in Kansas City, Service High took home the 5A Division Championship and earned the Outstanding Jazz Ensemble award — rising above 76 other school bands from across the country.
The competition celebrates the rich legacy of jazz legend Count Basie and challenges students to capture the spirit, sound, and swing style that made the Basie Orchestra legendary.
