I've been keeping pretty busy the last couple months with yoga teacher training and meditation teacher training, but I had to pop in to say hi (uhh...hi!) and Happy #StarWarsDay!! This is always a fun one, so make sure you swipe for the full reveal 👉...
Full disclosure: I've had this picture bookmarked for months 🙈💫 If you were around this time last year, you might already know about the connection between the force in Star Wars and the concept of prana or 'life force' in yogic tradition.
In fact, the force and the interconnectedness of light and dark in Star Wars has been compared to all sorts of magical, mystical, spiritual and religious traditions, including prana, qi, yin and yang, Navajo prayer, Zoroastrianism, and early Christianity.
I've re-posted an article (link in bio) from that explores how Star Wars can help us to better understand prana. Check it out if you haven't already! And may the force be with you! 🙏🕉♥

P.S. A big thanks to & her mini (AKA the meditating Baby Yodas 🥰) for inspiring this #AsanaSketch!
You may have noticed it's been a tad quiet around here lately. I decided 2021 was the year I was finally going to pursue some longterm goals that I've had simmering on the back burner. So I'm pretty proud to have recently completed a 100 hour meditation teacher training 🧘♀️ and I'm currently working my way through both a 200 hour meditation teacher training AND a 200 hour yoga teacher training.
Needless to say...my brain is drowning in information 🤯 but also overflowing with ideas for posts! Funny how when you have TOO many things to post about, you end up posting...nothing (for now) 😄
But my books are covered in doodles, scribbles and post-it notes that will hopefully take a more solid form soon. In the meantime, I'm just letting things percolate and enjoying the journey 🥰🙏
And don't think I've forgotten that today is May the 4th! So stay tuned for a very fun #MayTheFourthBeWithYou post coming a little later today...

Today we're celebrating colour and exploring some of the natural plant-based sources for traditional Holi colours. Have you ever made any of these?
I also pulled a favourite #AsanaSketch from the archives for this one, inspired by a gorgeous photo of.
Happy playing 😉💕

I had *so* much fun putting this one together (actually 🤓). But it took for-EVER because...
1. I'm still a beginner at Sanskrit, so I have to do a lot of reading to figure things like this out for myself first 🤔 (you might have guessed by now that my self-learning strategy involves colour coding and lots of doodles!)
2. I realised that drawing mandalas is, uh, SO. MUCH. FUN. Do we want colouring pages?? One of my clients already requested one of the mandala featured in this lesson, and I do like spoiling my clients 😅
3. I was also finishing up the April yoga social calendar! 🗓🌷 Which is waiting for you in your inbox as you read this! (Unless you haven't signed up yet (🆓️) in which case there is a link in my bio with your name on it 😉)
I'll share a few sneak peaks from this month's calendar in Stories later today, but I've been tied to my desk all morning so first I'm going out to enjoy the s̶u̶n̶s̶h̶i̶n̶e ample cloud cover (it is Scotland in March, after all 😅).
Have a lovely Sunday all! And to the time zones whose clocks also sprung forward today: Maybe we should take a nap?? Just me?

For the umpteenth time, I found myself trying to choose an asana inspired by a woman to celebrate the day. I do this every IWD and Mother's Day — a #ChooseToChallenge moment, if you will — and every year kind of ends with a frustrated sigh and "I guess Goddess Pose it is..."
We've had our share of asanas named for male gods, heroes and sages around here: Virabhadra, Astavakra, Vasistha, Nataraja, Hanuman, Anjaneya, and, of course, Bernie Saunders (#RealHeroesWearMasks).
But where are the women? The goddesses? The asanas named for Lakshmi, Parvati, Saraswati, and so on? I have an idea why this is, but...I keep looking for them anyway.
For example, I've shared the story of Anjana before, but the asana in which we find her name — Anjaneyasana — actually contains the matronymic 'Anjaneya' which means "Son of Anjana", and therefore refers to her son Hanuman.
And for a long time I thought "surely Padmasana must be named for Padma" (another name for the goddess Lakshmi). But the more I read, the more it seemed that Padmasana is referencing not the deity but the actual flower — or rather the 'lotus throne' — that we see figures like Shiva, Gautama Buddha and Lakshmi herself sit upon.
For a moment, when I was far down this particular rabbit hole, I got excited when I found an alternative name for lotus pose: Kamalasana, with 'Kamala' being another name for Lakshmi. This must be it! But alas, Kamalasana is actually an epithet for Brahma ('lotus-seated') in the Puranas. Hmm.
In the end, I settled for Goddess Pose "again" even though the Sanskrit name (Utkata Konasana) just...isn't as satisfying. I did manage to find a few passing reference to this asana as Kaliasana (i.e. the fearsome goddess Kali), but I can't seem to trace that back to any particular source or origin.
Long story short: I will keep looking. And if you have any ideas, please please DM me! (Interestingly, I've had significantly more luck with mudras and pranayamas...I wonder why that is?)
I hope you all are having an amazing day, that the sun is shining wherever you are, and that you feel as fierce as the goddess Kali this day and every day ✊

Author of Autobiography of a Yogi, Yogananda is sometimes referred to as the "Father of Yoga in the West." He moved from India to the United States in 1920, making him the first Hindu guru to settle and live out the remainder of his life in the US.
During an extended trip home to India in 1935-36, Yogananda was given the monastic title "Paramahansa" by his guru Sri Yukteswar Giri, which means supreme (parama) swan (hansa). This title is given to yogis who have achieved liberation or nirvikalpa samādhi.

☀️ Happy Surya Jayanti! 🌞
Today is Ratha Saptami—also known as Surya Jayanti or Surya's birthday—which is a Hindu festival that marks the birth of the sun god Surya.
Ratha = chariot
Saptami = the 7th day of the fortnight in the Hindu lunar calendar
Ratha Saptami is a symbolic representation of the change in seasons, with Surya turning his chariot led by seven horses toward the Northern Hemisphere and ushering in Spring and the harvest season. Swipe through the mini lesson above to learn more about Surya, including some vibrant traditional paintings depicting Surya and his chariot ☀️👉

Vrschika = Scorpion
Asana = Pose
Confession 1: This post was supposed to go up a couple weeks ago instead of Bernie-Asana.
Confession 2:...I regret nothing. Still funny 🙌😂
But back to Vrschikasana! I hope you enjoy this mini-lesson exploring the three-fold meaning of 'Vrschika' 🔍 I had a lot of fun with this one! Between recent posts and the Yoga Social Calendar, I've found myself learning a lot of about the Hindu calendar—and by extension Vedic astrology—in the last little while. Any book recommendations on the subject?? 👇👇 I think I'm hooked!

P.S. A big thank you to the lovely for inspiring this #AsanaSketch and mini-lesson on Vrschika!
P.P.S. Keep an eye out for the next post celebrating Surya Jayanti tomorrow! 🌞
Today is the Hindu festival Ganesha Jayanti, which marks the birth of Lord Ganesha. Celebrated predominantly in Maharashtra and Goa, it's one of two festivals that mark his birth, the more widely celebrated being Ganesh Chaturthi in the month of Bhadrapada (August/September).
I have always thought of Ganesha as a sort of patron of this project. I first started in January 2017, a few weeks after returning from my first trip to India with. Carefully packed in my suitcase were idols of Nataraja (to replace his grandparents' which was on loan at the time!) and Lord Ganesha for my working space (I work in digital education, so 'removing obstacles' is a re-occurring theme 😂)
In honour of Ganesha Jayanti, the quote I used above is John Grimes' translation of the popular Ganesha Gayatri Mantra, which is found in verse 8 of the Ganapati Upanishad (or Ganapati Atharvashirsa):
🕉️
एकदन्ताय विद्महे
वक्रतुण्डाय धीमहि
तन्नो दन्तिः प्रचोदयात्
eka-dantāya vidmahe
vakra-tuņdāya dhīmahi
tan no dantī pracodayāt
May we know the single tusked one,
May we meditate on the one with the curved trunk,
May that tusked one inspire knowledge and meditation of ours.
I like the idea of using this mantra as part of a learning or study ritual (this type of ritual is super helpful to get in a receptive headspace for online learning!) If it's part of your practice, give it a try! And feel free to share your favourite mantra below 👇
