Cloudbridge originated as a conceptual pedestrian bridge designed by: a suspended grid spanning between two supports, conceived primarily as a structural system rather than as a formal object. First presented on Designboom in 2013 as a speculative proposal, the project gradually evolved into a testing ground for computational design methodologies.
In the years that followed, as artificial intelligence began permeating architecture largely as an image-generation tool, the project expanded into a critical exploration of AIโs substantive role in design. The central question became whether AI could meaningfully support informed decision-making, structural control, and the evolution of complex geometries, or whether it was merely generating visually compelling outcomes.
The opportunity presented by the Hong KongโShenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture enabled the realization of a scaled physical model: a two-meter-long bridge prototype produced using SLA resin 3D printing. Engineers Vittorio Paris and Carlo Olivieri, carried out the structural analysis of the bridge and led the development of the scale model which was engineered to perform as a real structure rigid, structurally efficient, and optimized to reduce weight and cross-sectional material.

What struck me was not so much the car itself, its design, or its apparent discontinuity with the Ferrari language. What interested me was the kind of cultural question it opened (in my mind, at least) regarding Generative AI.
If we used GenAI to create some visions of a full electric Ferrari (quick example in the second image), the result would probably make both purists and innovation-enthusiasts happy. It would be very Ferrari and very electric. It would carry the signs of the brand, while projecting the familiar imagery of a technological future. In other words, it would likely be convincing and immediately legible.
When we try to imagine the future, how much of the past must remain visible for that future to be recognized as legitimate? And, more importantly, when does a rupture become innovation, and when does it simply sound wrong?
This question feels particularly urgent in relation to generative AI.
We are daily exposed to AI-generated โvisions of the futureโ in architecture and design that look powerful at first glance, but become perfectly readable after a few seconds: a bit of Saarinen, a bit of Zaha, a certain parametric vocabulary, some cinematic atmosphere, a familiar idea of technological smoothness. The result may be visually impressive, but its genealogy is often too easy to reconstruct.
Originality rarely comes from recombination alone. It comes from a displacement: a change in viewpoint, in intention, in technology, in cultural necessity. It comes from knowing what to keep, what to betray, and why.
Because the future is not produced by breaking continuity at any cost. But neither is it produced by endlessly refining the past. Somewhere between recognition and estrangement, between memory and error, perhaps, originality begins.
