Flashback: Lin Zhipeng: "I am always looking to document daily curiosities; the small but sensual details that often go unnoticed.” (in an interview with AnOther Mag)

In the Solo/Duo section, from Antwerp presented work by the Chinese artist Lin Zhipeng. The Beijing-based photographer became a renowned figure in China’s online community when he launched his blog North Latitude 23 in 2003, which has received millions of views since. Through this platform, he presented spontaneous photographs of his friends in provocative and unrestrained poses, capturing a youthful generation's craving for freedom, experimentation and love in a conservative society. Lin’s work depicts an alternative youth culture in China, balancing chaos, eroticism and a lust for life. Zhipeng showed his work extensively in China and abroad at MEP Paris, the Delaware Contemporary Museum, the Walther Collection, the Art Gallery of Western Australia, Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and Saint Laurent's Rive Droite (under the curation of Anthony Vaccarello, the creative director of Yves Saint Laurent). Zhipeng is also known under the pseudonym 'No. 223’, which references a character from the Wong Kar-Wai’s film Chungking Express. Flashback — (Belgium) offered a truly unique view of early Antarctic photography in the Past/Present section of Unseen. The negatives of explorer Captain Falcon Scott have only recently been discovered and were shown at Unseen for the very first time, alongside Herbert Ponting's iconic images of the Terra Nova Expedition (1910‑1913). All pieces presented are platinum palladium prints, with exceptional tonal range and archival stability, produced from the original negatives that were brought back from several early Antarctic expeditions. Flashback: Jaehun Park — featured work by Jaehun Park and Katrin Korfmann in the Solo/Duo section of Art Rotterdam. Jaehun Park’s virtual works deal with current problematic events on Earth by zooming in on cleverly chosen metaphors and objects. In his simulated video works, he translates physical substance using 3D scanning technology into virtual substance. He uses hyper-realistic 3D rendering to stage mass-produced objects – as vessels of capitalistic ideology – in an abandoned digital space or to situate them in ‘ritualistic’ installations depicting impossible natural phenomena. His work has been included in the collections of the AkzoNobel Art Foundation, Hyundai Motors, ING, LAM Museum, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture. His work will be on view in the Grote Kerk Alkmaar from 26 March. Explore more work from the booth in the online catalogue on: [link in our bio].

Flashback: Luz Blanco — “[The work] ‘En.Vie’ [seen on the right here] is a large roll of transparent pink tracing paper on which a series of images are assembled in layers of memory, like palimpsests where the living and the digital weave overlap and sometimes hack each other. A play of folds and creases that veil parts, questioning the desires and fantasies that haunt our memories. Are memories something we possess or something we have lost?”

In the Encounters section of Unseen, created a dialogue between the work of Luz Blanco and Berkay Tuncay. In her practice, Blanco explores how memories are formed, fade and are reconstructed, with images and texts carrying traces of both presence and disappearance. Her work invites a more metaphorical approach to the notion of ‘soft error’, a mistake that poses no threat to the system that produced it. Her work moves between remembering and forgetting, raising the question of whether memories are something we possess or something we slowly lose.

Flashback: Cristina Toledo — (Madrid) featured a solo by the Spanish artist Cristina Toledo. In her paintings, the artist examines how women have been represented throughout the history of cinema. Toledo often begins with existing film images, which she removes from their original context and translates into carefully constructed paintings. An important starting point for this research was her artist’s book 'Cinema Paradiso', for which she transformed two hundred film frames from the famous final scene of Giuseppe Tornatore’s 1988 film of the same name into an equal number of paintings. This project laid the foundation for a broader interest in the ways female characters have been constructed and remembered in film history. Toledo focuses on iconic roles from different periods of cinema. Well-known actresses from classical Hollywood such as Marilyn Monroe, Veronica Lake, Judy Garland and Kim Novak appear alongside images from more recent films such as ‘Portrait of a Lady on Fire' (2019), a film marked by the so-called female gaze [painting seen here, center left]. In her work, Toledo reveals how female figures in cinema have often been shaped by male perspectives (the ‘male gaze’) and familiar archetypes such as the femme fatale. By reframing these images and isolating them from their original narratives, she opens space for a more critical and contemporary conversation about representation, desire and the persistent images that continue to shape the history of cinema today. Flashback: Birgit Graschopf — In the booth of / by IBASHO, you could see several works by Birgit Graschopf [seen here in the back]. The Austrian artist creates staged photographic works that explore the uncanny and empowering dimensions of femininity. These tableaus are often set in abandoned architectural spaces, where ghostlike figures, shadows and unfinished structures evoke an equal sense of mystery and isolation. Her practice includes photographs on unconventional materials such as sandpaper, concrete and fragmented cardboard, as well as “photographic frescoes”, in which images are exposed directly onto walls. Explore more work from the booth in the online catalogue on: [link in our bio].
