A very short carousel of an equally short trip to Paris with Emma in the snow. Where we discovered an absolute gem of a hotel in Pigalle in the form of, ate very many baked goods, headed to for the John Singer Sargent exhibition before it closed, vegged out in our room with facemasks, burgers and Under Paris (an amazingly terrible shark film) and just had fun hanging out with each other, wandering about and not doing that much, really.

Estrangement and Tricky Family Dynamics: The Holiday Edition

Ok, these tips are mainly just pre-planning for some seasonal self care so can be rolled out in quite a lot of situations, though I had estrangement in mind when I made this. While the holidays are delightful for some, they come with a lot of pressure to have the Best Day Ever and if you're staring down the abyss of stressful family dynamics or a low or no contact person to navigate, you're probably a bit anxious about the upcoming few days.. I've some top tips here that have been pretty effective for me in the past:

1. Have a timeline in mind. People misbehave when they've loosened their belts emotionally, so an open-ended trip is unwise because it gives people the time and stimulants to do just that. They might be drunk/bored/frustrated or have been gearing themself up to saying something. If you have a predefined portion of time, you're likely to miss the misbehaviour, and you'll manage your own expectations on how long you need to be there.

2. Have your messaging straight and deliver it to a trusted relative reassuring them you don't plan to add to the drama while being clear why you're being boundaried. If you're estranged, use my 'what if it was my partner' line. It's very hard for someone to respond to you saying, 'this person hurts me in this way' or 'they've been abusing me mentally/physically' if you prefix it in that way. If you're just not up for revisiting toxic conversations or passive aggressive slights, have a short but firm response ready about talking about it another time (you're probably not going to talk about it another time) or if it's just a bit awkward and needling - explain how you're trying to avoid that this year and always try to reassure people that you're trying your best to not have your choices impact on them - showing your thinking of the whole family setup makes people far more understanding. I've added a sixth point in comments to qualify this

This is our fourth year with this garden, and I absolutely adore it. Getting here with nearly no gardening experience felt so daunting, but we knew we wanted a tiny little pocket of the Lancashire countryside I grew up in right here in London. A big blousy nature garden to escape to. So we learned fast, worked hard, and made tonnes of mistakes. But it's getting there, and I planted, grew, and sustained every inch of it - which makes me weirdly even prouder of it than the house. Because I did it and and to keep it that way, I have to keep doing it. And that gives me so much joy. The time has come to replace this wallpaper. Not that I don't love it but it was terribly fitted and I can look at the wonky joins no longer plus it doesn't really go with the sofa. We're having a switcharound in the spare bedroom and the only things that are staying are the sofa, the tambour drawers, and the portraits. Any suggestions welcome. At the moment, I'm considering going back to all over yellow (it's the shade I designed for called Wet Harvest) OR something stripey. Any ideas pop them in the comments!

ad Such a joy to find a new place that's ideal for a mini break. Doubly so if it's also heavily arts focussed and dog friendly to boot. took a few of us away to celebrate the upcoming launch of Turner & Constable - Rivals & Originals exhibition. It's an exploration of these wildly different artists in the 250th year of their birth. They couldn't be more different - think Blur and Oasis in oils. And boy, did we have a blast plus learn a heap about both of them. Starting with Constable country. I've not seen much of Essex or Suffolk but a weekend simply wouldn't be enough to appreciate all the views captured by Constable, visit the stellar National Trust property and generally take in all the wonder of the Stour and the surrounding villages. was a perfect base with incredible food, and the village of Dedham itself was full of vintage and charity shops to keep the shopping addicts amused. Then off to the coast and Turner's favourite destination. As well as the shoreline that Turner referenced repeatedly, there's great restaurants, shops, galleries and the and it's always amazing exhibitions (and sometimes, but not always, a resident Turner on offer). After a heavenly lunch at, we checked out creative event space for a few hours of sketching with and then, back to London. 48 hours down. Two future holiday destinations on the cards and a date in the diary to see Turner & Constable - Rivals & Originals the minute it opens on the 27th November!

If you're willing to trawl the Internet for a old cast iron bath, wrestle it into a van, wrestle it out a van and into your garden and have the funds and structural capacity to get a plumber to plumb you a hot outdoor tap (we did it initially for dog cleaning) which you then connect a hose to, then you too can have a garden bath. It's the very best thing I did in our garden.

ad IT'S HERE. The study of dreams. I have loved Heal's for, well, forever. It calls to all my senses - beautiful pieces with personality that are built to last and a focus on championing the work of independent makers. When they asked if I wanted to work with them on my study, I nearly fainted. Their in-house design service helped me create a space that was beautiful, stimulating, and oh so Heal's BUT also worked as well practically for me and for Jamie. They were there every step of the way making sure I didn't pack in too much, or choose things at the wrong scale, or, I don't know, accidentally create a space completely devoid of storage. The result is so artful and authentic and makes it a place we really want to work. From the central Treviso Desk by to the Adam Wood shelves filled with antiques, curios and a healthy helping of artisan ceramics by makers like. Textiles are at the core, from the rug to the blanket and who could be without the Cabana cushions. And the Remi sideboard provides the aforementioned storage solutions. My original art, including everyone from to was joined by statement pieces like the humungous print and the result feels seamlessly us, and also Heal's to the max. So what do you reckon?
