Having finally recovered from the 2024 renovation of 72 West Port, we're now just about to start renovation of 74 West Port! We hope this will make our premises accessible to more people.

We're open as usual until 18:30 on Monday 5 January so come enjoy a browse. After that the exact timings will be subject to whatever whimsical nonsense the shop throws our way through the building work. We'll keep opening hours updated on our website and on our Google Maps listing.
UPDATE: Applications now closed--we got nearly 150! (Yes, we read every single one, no weird AI filtering.) Thank you all for the care you put into these, you delightful bookworms.

Armchair Books is hiring! We're looking for TWO part-time booksellers (ad hoc and fixed work patterns). We're an accredited
employer and you get a sweet staff discount. Applications close at the end of day on Tuesday 28 May.

We find these jobs best suit people who need a bit of reliable extra income to keep them going whilst they pursue their ‘real’ job/interests elsewhere (e.g., students, artists, designers, craftspeople, sex workers, part-time care workers, etc).

Details in the Working For Us section of our website:
We're back!

If you want the full Armchair Books experience then don't swipe on this post--come visit us in person! (SO MANY OF YOU DID TODAY. There was a QUEUE at the door at opening time. We've never felt so cool. Thank you so much for coming and for all of your kind words.)

For the rest of you playing along at home, enjoy these before and after photos.

(Renovations are more iterative than social media would have you believe, so expect wee adjustments in the coming months.)

Highlights:

- Our new staff desk-and-bookcase monster is made from a Frankenstein-ed old oak dining table, plywood, and the woodworking audacity of the co-proprietor (pictured here, exhausted by the consequences of her decisions, being held up by the big green bookcase that now houses our tiny books)

- We sourced all of the other 'new' bookcases secondhand from around Lothian, plus one very old piece we couldn't resist from Wales

- Our fabulous staff helped us dismantle the old layout and put it all back together in a new form, moving thousands of books in the process--neither the collective effort nor the amount of caffeine consumed over the past 10 days can be overstated

- The shop has improved accessibility! Various lanes have been widened and in the coming year we'll be working on making the space wheelchair accessible. (For now there are still two internal steps--and the bathroom is a lost cause--but contact us ahead of your visit if you have any access questions and we'll do everything we can to get you in amongst the books.)

Come browse. We have books.
EVERYTHING IS FINE. (You know this is true because fine things are always communicated in all caps.)

Basically we lifted a rug and there was another rug under that and another under that and we kept going and then we thought it was supposed to be turtles all the way down but it was actually more rugs and then we hit Earth's core, which was super awkward (sorry).

Anyway we need some more time to figure out where to put all of these books so see you the afternoon of Friday 22 March (unless things happen, but there couldn't possibly be any more rugs under this...). Thank you for bearing with us.
We're closing for renovation from 13-20 March 2024! (It might take a little longer, to be honest, if we accidentally unshelve The One Book that has been quietly holding this whole place together.)

Consider this the universe encouraging you to make a dent in that pile of books you have stacked up next to the sofa...

See you soon!
Just over two years after Covid-19 closed our shop for the first time, we are RETURNING TO PRE-PANDEMIC HOURS. We sort of can't believe it.

Thank you so much to all of you who have spent the past couple of years ordering books from us online, or ordering for Books By Bicycle, or actually QUEUING OUTSIDE IN ALL WEATHER just to come hang out in person, in masks, in shared retreat from the outside world. We would not still be here without you.

The stupid virus is still out there so we will still have last-minute closures due to staff illness (hopefully rare and with no impact on anyone aside from annoyance), but mostly: 10:00 to 18:30, every damn day, until we run out of books or join the circus.
UPDATE: Applications are now closed! In less than 48 hours we received SIXTY-FIVE applications from so many exceptional candidates. We have our work cut out for us creating a short-list to interview. You'll hear from us one way or another in the next week.

We're hiring! A couple of our wonderful staff moved on to some extremely cool jobs closer to their academic qualifications (sad for us, but also we love seeing our people flourish) and our ad hoc staff from the last hiring exercise have now become regular staff. And so the life cycle of an old bookshop continues.

Join us! Details here:

We recommend applying ASAP. Last time the advert only lasted two days before we were overwhelmed with applications.
UPDATE: The position has now been filled. If the website says 'no vacancies', please don't send an application--we really don't have any jobs going.

HOLY COW Armchair Books is hiring! This is the first time in years we've advertised a vacancy--we're excited to invite someone new to join our team. Maybe you? Head over to the Working For Us section of our website for more details.

Please. We beg of you. We are so tired.
The serious work of running a secondhand bookshop is seriously improved if you have the good sense to locate your bookshop within walking distance of. This scoop of rhubarb and ginger biscuit (!) gelato was my lunch because I am a grown-ass adult doing my best to live the life I promised my 8-year-old self.

(Also did you know that the line at is not quite as long when it's hailing? Not QUITE as long. Multiple wee ice pellets from the sky hit me on the head and I wasn't even a little alone. Shout-out to the die-hards.)
