It took me two years to capture a photo of a Striped Hyena in an urban area crossing a road. I was in the right place at the right time to capture this individual (not Ruthy) as it used the road as a crossing junction. Field and intelligence work assisted me to know where to wait and position myself for the Striped Hyena. The local wildlife also uses the road as a crossing junction, the road is physically built on a wildlife path of which is now divided because the presence of the road. Wildlife crossings are structural passages beneath or above roadways that are designed to enable safe wildlife movement across roadways. Safe wildlife crossings must be established to prevent the next death.

I was saddened to receive the tragic news that Ruthy, the well-known and most famous Striped Hyena (and predator) in Israel was struck and killed by a vehicle on Highway 443 in the central district of Israel this weekend (July 16th, 2022), at age six. When I first started photographing Ruthy back in 2018, little did I know she’d become a public figure and symbol of co-existence between wildlife and urbanisation. Every night, she entered the city to forage for scarps in rubbish bins. Not everyone was keen on her nightly habits. Twice she was captured by the authorities and relocated, in both attempts she made her way back to the city. At one point, the Israeli court ruled that Ruthy should be trapped. Ruthy’s intelligence overran the authorities ambushes and traps, they never succeeded in capturing her, she became very skittish after being relocated twice before, the authorities eventually abandoned the mission. Ruthy raised cubs at least twice, and possibly more. It was a massive honour to receive in 2019 the ‘Highly Commended’ award in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year international competition for my photo ‘The Charm of Ruthy’. In addition to that I received an ‘Honourable mention’ at the 2021 Siena International Photo Awards competition in Italy for the ‘Evening Stretch’ photo of Ruthy. I had an intimate acquaintance with Ruthy, her death is tragic, here are a few photos of Ruthy to celebrate her life.

This image features Ruthy, a well-known female striped hyena living in the Central District of Israel. This was back in 2018 when I devoted the majority of my efforts in documenting and studying this individual's life. The striped hyena is an endangered species as the global population is estimated to be less than 10,000 wild specimens.
Surviving in the desert has become tougher and more challenging in the past few years, organisms wishing to survive must adapt to the harsh and arid desert environment. Nubian Ibex is one of those organisms which are well-adapted to hot climates, with a shiny coat thought to help reflect sunlight to keep cool. Like other species in harsh environments, habitat loss, climate change (global warming), droughts, and hunting remain a concern. Israel is home to around 1000 individuals, listed as a ‘vulnerable’ species on the IUCN red list.
Israel is the last stronghold of the endangered mountain gazelle and is home to roughly 5000 individuals. The mountain gazelle (Gazella gazella) was once widespread throughout Middle Eastern countries including Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan, and Egypt. However, habitat lost/fragmentation/isolation and, hunting, road accidents, predation by feral dogs and natural predators – led to the complete extinction of gazelles in those areas. Local to my residence in the Central District of Israel, lives the largest concentration of mountain gazelles in the land, the authorities estimate that 70-100 individuals stretch through this area. Additionally, the territory is also used as a wildlife corridor which is sadly facing habitat fragmentation which includes road construction and future expansion of human settlements.
A Common Crane calling-in-flight at dawn, as it flies-off the shores of the Hula lake on its way to forage for food in nearby fields. Overwintering along with a flock of around 40,000 fellow Common Cranes who opted to remain in the north of Israel, rather than continue their journey to the original destination in Africa. As the winter season in Israel has come to an end, by now, the flocks migrated to their breeding grounds in Northern Europe.
The Mediterranean Spur-Thighed Tortoise (Testudo graeca) living peacefully in its natural wild habitat in the Golan Heights of Israel. Living a solitary life, this tortoise also known as the ‘Greek Tortoise’ meets its kind only during mating seasons, in the fall and in the spring. The mature tortoises are not threatened that much by predators, except for the Striped Hyena, which is able to crush its shell with his strong jaws with ease. In Israel, it is forbidden to keep tortoises in homes, yards or gardens. It is one of the animals protected under the wildlife protection law. The Greek Tortoise is listed in the #IUCN red list as a ‘vulnerable’ species. As human beings we have the power and knowledge to save species and environments at risk by spreading awareness with our friends, family, and use tools like social media as a way to reach huge audiences across the globe like never before.

A Common Crane examining and feeding on nut grass. I watched this crane forage along with its family nearby the shore of the Hula Lake. In the 1950’s, the Hula Valley in northern Israel was drained because it was a malaria-ridden patch of land. Today, the Hula Valley is not just a wetland paradise for birds and a major stopover for millions of migrating birds flying from Europe to Africa and back, it has become an overwintering site for more than 40,000 Common Cranes. Wetland restoration work and increasing crane populations elsewhere are the main reasons cranes decide to stay in Israel over the winter months.

The Shadow of the Vulture.
On a late winter morning in the Negev Desert, a Griffon Vulture flies through the valley. I used a slow shutter speed and panned along with its shadow against the canyon wall, implying a feeling of motion.

Griffon Vultures play a major role in this ecosystem. Referred as the 'vacuum cleaners' of nature by rapidly cleaning up and recycling bodies of dead animals.
I followed this adult Ibex along with its herd on the steep cliff edge during its morning routine in search for water and food. My goal was to include one of the impressive males against this majestic backdrop. In the last few years, surviving in the desert has become tougher and more challenging: any organism wishing to survive must adapt to the harsh and arid desert environment. The Nubian Ibex is one of those organisms which is well-adapted to hot climates. its natural habitat is rocky, rough and, mountainous terrain, which they take advantage of to raise their young to protect them from predators. Today, approximately 1000 Ibex live in Israel, the species is listed in the #IUCN red list as a 'vulnerable' species. The causes are mainly poaching, habitat lost and, drought.
