Arati Kadav is writer, director working in Mumbai.
She has pioneered the independent science fiction genre in India and made six short films, one of which, the 40-minute featurette Time Machine (2017), is currently available on Mubi and Amazon. Her short film Astronaut And His Parrot won the audience choice and Best director Award at Fantasia film festival. Her debut feature, Cargo (2019), is a science fiction drama exploring themes of life, death and reincarnation. It played at 27 film festivals around the world, including LIFF, SXSW, the Miami International Science Fiction Film Festival – where it won Best Sci-Fi Feature and the Audience Award – and the Shanghai Film Festival, where Arati was nominated for the Asian New Talent Award. The film was later acquired by Netflix.
Her second feature film Mrs, on themes of identiy and womanhood, premiered in Talinn Black Nights (2023) and went on to become a widely popular movie in India.
DEEPA BHATIA
Deepa Bhatia is a Mumbai-based film editor, documentary director and producer.
She has edited over thirty features, including Rock On!! My Name is Khan and Taare Zameen Par. Her documentary works include the hugely successful, Sachin, a Billion Dreams and Famous: Honey Singh, on India’s best known rapper.
She works closely with her partner Amole Gupte to create meaningful cinema for children.
Her first documentary Nero’s Guests, (Arte, YLE) premiered at IDFA, reported on
the agrarian crisis through journalist P.Sainath and won several awards including FIPRESCI at MIFF, 2010.
She has recently written, directed and produced First Act, a six-part documentary series on child actors, currently airing on Prime Video and is currently developing her debut feature.
The jury headed by Shekhar Kapur will consider the best films to be premiered at the BFI Southbank on 11th June.
This event is in collaboration with AUFA ventures who will be presenting an award for the Best Film in this category entitled AIFA ventures Award.

It’s so magical for me to witness your gentle blossoming and feel your sweetness and warmth everyday.
I can speak about you endlessly but on your birthday I want to talk about one particular incident that made me so emotional.
This was when my friend cooked for all of us and he worked hard for 2 hours but the curry came out spicy. All of us complained the curry is spicy and you said - “What its not spicy at all” and you ate the whole thing for lunch. Later I realised you ate it with 3 full glasses of water and I asked why did you say its not spicy - and you said - “mumma didn’t you see how hard he worked and you all were not being supportive. It was so yummy, just slightly spicy and I wanted him to not feel bad.”
That day I felt so proud - if you can develop the nuance between being honest and having empathy, you have really won in life.
Remember, Yooki, no matter what profession you are in, whether you are going through good days or bad days, war or sunshine, the world will always need brilliant, kind people who can put themselves in others shoes and understand them. I am so fortunate that you are my daughter and so grateful that the future is being shaped by tiny kind hands like yours.
