I’m a huge Tom Ford era Gucci fan and I still think those older Jackie bags had something incredibly special to them. The shape, the ease, the slightly sexier feeling of them. But I also have to admit the newer Jackie, especially the mini version, is actually pretty cool too. So this is not me saying every new version is automatically bad. 😋
But in general, older bags often just had more character in the details.
The hardware felt heavier. The leather had more depth. Even the proportions were sometimes slightly better before everything became so polished and over corrected.
Especially with bags like the Galliano era Dior Saddle, pre 2010 Prada nylon, the original Fendi Baguette, the Chloé Paddington or the older Balenciaga City bags. The newer versions often look extremely similar, but side by side the originals just have more attitude somehow.
Same with the Saint Laurent Mombasa reissue. Beautiful bag. But the original Tom Ford era versions still feels just cooler. I also love the leather quality of the old ones and the new ones are just too clean.
And honestly, I don’t even think this is about “vintage is better”. It’s just the quality and workmanship that speaks for itself in a lot of cases.
Also fully aware I sound slightly insane talking about the emotional impact of hardware weight, but I stand by it. Lol

It’s not about buying crazy expensive beige basics and hoping they magically look expensive.
Some clothes just have a certain weight, softness and drape to them that instantly make an outfit feel richer. Dense wool that falls properly. Crisp cotton. Natural fabrics that breathe and move nicely. Clean finishings and a good cut.
That’s usually the thing people are reacting to when they say someone “looks expensive”. Not the logo.
