A finely-engraved bird’s-eye view of Venice, with much detail: the important buildings, shown in profile and named; the course of the Grand Canal, with the Rialto Bridge; and various galleons and galleys, including a galleon beached for repair, and the Doge’s barge. Engraved in 1635, the plate had a very long life: Moretto records much later states with considerable re-engraving, one with buildings erected in 1813!

For over a century Europeans believed California was an island, but this important map by Father Kino titled: Tabula Californiae Anno 1702 Ex autoptica observatione delineata a R.P. Chino è S.I. Shed light on another theory.
kino’s map was drawn in 1702 but not published until it was included in Joseph Stöcklein’s ‘Allerhand So Lehr-Als Geist-Reich Brief, Schrifften und Reis-Beschreibungen, welche von denen Missionariis’. Kino ), an Italian Jesuit, travelled to New Spain in 1682 and stayed there the rest of his life. He travelled extensively and used his knowledge of astronomy and mathematics to compile maps of the region. Although he never crossed to California by land, his observations from a high point near the Colorado River, from which he saw only land to the west, caused him to state California was a peninsula. It was nearly another half-century before this was proved.

A very decorative map of Ireland which, despite the date, still uses the elongated mapping of Gerard Mercator. The elaborate title cartouche features Hercules standing with one foot on a prostrate harpy, the arms of William & Mary adorning an arch behind him. The scale cartouche depicts the Roman gods (including Neptune), around the Gaelic harp, and a volcano erupting behind. Koeman gives the original publication date as 1697.

Japponiae Nova & Accurata descriptio Per R.P. Antonium Franciscum Cardim Societatis Jesu Ad Elogia Japponica.
This is a fine example of a very uncommon map, published in Cardim’s ‘Fasciculus e Japponicis floribus, suo adhuc madentibus sanguine’, an illustrated history of the martyrdoms in Japan from 1597 to 1640. A 36-point key lists the Jesuit properties in Japan and a vignette ship illustrates the landing of St Francis Xavier, a co-founder of the Jesuits on Japan, e15th August 1549. Cardim ), a Portuguese Jesuit, travelled to Goa, Vietnam and China between 1618 to 1638. After a period back in Europe, during which time he wrote this book, he set sail for the East again in 1649. After a ship wreck off Mozambique he arrived in Goa in 1650. In 1653 he was captured by Dutch privateers who kept him prisoner for over two years. He died in Macao, aged 63, never having visited Japan.

This antique map is from the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the first modern atlas and shows Britain, Scandinavia, Iceland, Greenland and parts of North America in great detail.
The map also shows many mythical islands: the islands of Hy Brasil & st Brendan from Celtic mythology, Drogeo believed to represent Newfoundland, Frisland which is just off the coast of Iceland, and Groclandt.
