A True Story for Reflection
After I told one of my friends the story related below, he asked me, "Why do we not meet priests of this kind?" I will leave the answer to the reader.
While browsing an Orthodox website one day, I came across this story, rich with spiritual lessons for anyone willing to reflect. I wanted to share it briefly with my dear readers because I found in it a practical answer to what I had presented in the previous two articles.
This story appeared in a recently published electronic book in Moscow, issued in Russian, English, and French, titled Everyday Saints. It contains real stories as well as symbolic ones. Among them is the story of "the novice bishop." The word "novice" here refers to monastic novitiate. (We have received a great blessing from this man in this Archdiocese, because he served as a bishop for several years in America.)
The story centers on Bishop Basil Rodzianko, who fell asleep in the Lord in 1999. He was born into a Russian aristocratic family. His grandfather was the president of the Imperial Duma, which forced the family into exile in 1920, when the bishop was still a child.
They ended up in Serbia. There he grew up, was educated, and came to know great church figures, among them the one who later became archbishop and then Saint John Maximovitch. Basil married a young woman whom he loved deeply, chose the priesthood as the path of service to his people, and took Saint Vladimir as his patron. After the communists came to power during and after the Second World War, he refused to leave Serbia, even though he faced the real danger of arrest as a priest.
And that is exactly what happened. Once the new Yugoslavia had become established, persecution against the Church intensified. He was sent to a prison camp for eighteen months.

The Antiochian Village Council announced that all outstanding capital projects have been completed, from the cabins and Namie Hall at the Camp to the electrical upgrades and water softening system in the Conference and Retreat Center. Renovations of bathrooms in the guest rooms are underway at the Conference Center as well.
In the Archdiocese Board of Trustees meeting, the Dept. of Finance reported that, thank God, the Archdiocese is experiencing financial growth. The $5.8 million budget included a stipend increase for the bishops and overdue repairs to their chanceries.
Sayidna Saba also hopes to create more funding for missions – especially after surges of conversions – spiritual pilgrimages, clergy training and seminarian recruitment.
The Governing Council of The Order of St. Ignatius of Antioch announced that it is increasing its contribution to the Archdiocese's ministries and budget by 20 percent to $1 million annually. This comes as 51 generous people simultaneously joined or upgraded their memberships at St. Nicholas Cathedral in Los Angeles on Sunday, April 26.

With the blessing of His Eminence Metropolitan Saba, the Archdiocese Board of Trustees was introduced to conceptual renderings of St. Raphael Church which would be located adjacent to the Camp and overlooking the Conference and Retreat Center.
Mr. Dimitri Zeidan, Trustee and chairman of the Antiochian Village Council, added in his presentation that the church could contain a balcony for additional worshippers, and an underground mausoleum and an adjacent cemetery. Other features can be added through the planning stages.
The new church would not replace the other houses of worship on the Village grounds that campers and conference attendees have come to love over the decades, although costs to maintain them continue to rise. Instead, St. Raphael Church would allow for more worshippers to gather in one place to praise God together.
St. Raphael bears great significance for the Antiochian Archdiocese that he founded as the Syro-Arabian Mission in 1895. He was buried near St. Ignatius Church at the Camp. Now, his miracle working relics rest in a beautiful shrine in Ss. Peter and Paul Church in the Conference Center. God willing, they will move to the church that will bear his name.
The presentation for the future church came during the spring meetings of the Archdiocese from April 30-May 3, 2026 at the Antiochian Village. Metropolitan Saba presided alongside His Grace Bishop Thomas and His Grace Bishop John.

Days earlier, His Beatitude ordained His Grace Paul (Ordologlou) as Bishop of the newly established Diocese of Tarsus, Adana, and the Region of Alexandretta (Hatay) in southern Turkey, historic Antioch. His Grace accompanied His Beatitude, as well as His Eminence Metropolitan Ephraim of Aleppo, Syria, and Archimandrite Parthenios Allati, secretary to Patriarch John.
His All-Holiness warmly received His Beatitude and his retinue for a fraternal meeting. During the visit, Patriarch John prayed in the Patriarchal Cathedral of St. George as well as the Metropolis Cathedral of the Holy Trinity in nearby Chalcedon, where he was welcomed by His Eminence Elder Metropolitan Emmanuel.
His Beatitude also visited the Holy Monastery of Zoodochos Pegi (Life-giving Spring), Valoukli, where the sisterhood warmly greeted him. Patriarch John celebrated the Trisagion (memorial) service before the tomb of the venerable Patriarch Demetrios, the immediate predecessor to Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, also praying for the repose of the souls of all the Ecumenical Patriarchs who rest in the courtyard of the monastery, at the gracious invitation of His All-Holiness.

Some have attributed the decline of the sanctifying dimension in the lives of believers to the neglect of the clergy. Yet to place responsibility on priests alone while ignoring the responsibility of the faithful is not accurate. Not all clergy are saints, nor are all believers. There are many good priests, but they are often discouraged by the pressure placed upon them to be everything except sanctifiers. Thus, while the responsibility of the clergy is indeed great, there is also a great responsibility resting upon the faithful. In the previous article, I referred to the role of all of us, and to the importance of the home in spiritual formation.
For this reason, I would like to expand a little further on this topic and speak about prayer, its role, and some of the current obstacles, especially those caused by believers themselves. I hope to shed light on our shared responsibility, clergy and laity alike, for this absence of prayer, so that together we may rise to a more active life of sanctification.
Let us begin by speaking of the richness of the Orthodox rite, in particular the Byzantine rite. This rite is distinguished by its liturgical richness and by the way it liturgically embraces the full range of human life. The Church accompanies the believer with her prayers from conception to birth, to the child's first entrance into the church, then through Baptism, Holy Communion, and spiritual growth. She blesses life through the divine sacraments, blesses the home through the sanctification of water, and likewise blesses fields and possessions. She accompanies the faithful in sickness, travel, study, engagement, marriage, and even to the moment of departure from this life. Nor does she cease afterward, for she continues to pray for the repose of the soul.
