Today I officially became a Jeopardy clue! I’m getting marauded with questions about the whole affair, so I’ll share a little with you.
I got a Zoom call from composer Sid Khosla in the fall of 2020 to take this extremely catchy theme he wrote and transform it into a series of bassoon quintet arrangements, which turned out to be a very fun and rewarding mid-pandemic project.
Sid sang it to me on Zoom, and I played it back on my bassoon with some variations, and we got to work. I had escaped up to Yosemite National Park for a few days, and I began arranging Sid's theme up there in the mountains. This tune turned out to be the melody for the Main Title for the hit show "Only Murders in the Building", starring Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez.
Eventually, we began working on each of the episodic cues, which I recorded at my home studio at first, and then at a small studio in the Valley as the covid restrictions began to ease. I even got to fill in for orchestrator/conductor Mark Graham and conduct on a couple of episodes at Capitol Records before it shut down.
Sid then turned me over to the production side of the show, where I worked with Micha Liberman, Jill Risk, Bruce Gilbert, and Lauren Mikus, who wanted to record some solo bassoon excerpts that the actress Amy Ryan would play in a scene with Steve Martin
I recorded Gabriel Fauré’s “Pavane”, the nursery rhyme “If You’re Happy and You Know it”, and Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy?”. They sent over the script and very specific mixing and timing instructions, and I got to work in my studio.
Then production asked for the “Berceuse” from Igor Stravinsky’s ballet “The Firebird”, which is a very important solo in our repertoire, and quite a pressure to record for permanence sake. What an honor for me!
Every bit of this was a lovely, unique experience and a wonderful memory. Here we are six years later, and I became a Jeopardy Clue. A day etched in history!
I want to thank my designer, Quentin Thrash of Thrash Bespoke, for creating this incredible custom suit for me, which debuted at Lincoln Center.
This was a night I’ll not soon forget!
