Ansett Airlines F27-6108 VH-FNT at Tullamarine, with a sneaky cameo from Ansett Airlines Boeing 727-277A VH-RMO on final approach and executing a landing so smooth it should’ve come with a seatbelt warning.
This gloriously retro flight on Ansett Airlines F27-6108 VH-FNT took place in the golden years of 1980/81 and was immortalised on film by the one and only Rohan Craddock.
Rohan’s Dad, Geoff Craddock, was a bona fide Boeing 727 Captain (aviation royalty, really) while Rohan wielded the mighty camera as Ansett’s visual media maestro.
This flight? Purely orchestrated for the cameras, destined to become part of a training film (and possibly a cult classic in niche aviation circles).
Starring: Rohan Craddock, Cap’n Bloggs, Peter Gates, dreem (on ‘guidance’ 🎧), and the illustrious Flying Lizard Tinkering Department, because every good production needs a bit of lizard magic.

Imagine the scene: ANSETT-ANA DC-6B VH-INS ‘Beltana’ (named for running water) in the crisp Tasmanian morning, firing up her mighty Pratt & Whitney engines for the journey from Hobart to Melbourne in 1957.
The aircraft, a gorgeous aircraft of its time, is brought to life by four thunderous R-2800 Double Wasp 18-cylinder, air-cooled radial piston engines.
These massive powerplants are famous for their ruggedness, legendary reliability, and ability to generate 2,400-2,500 horsepower each, propelling the aircraft to cruising speeds of over 300 mph.
Forget the sterile convenience of jetways and aerobridges; nothing compares to the sensory thrill of striding or plodding across the tarmac. Feeling the cool air tinged with the scent of fuel and anticipation when walking toward the waiting propeller giant and watching the engines fire to life in a haze of smoke.

A true globe-trotter, HYX later served with Onur Air (Turkey), Goodjet (Sweden), Air Malta, and Freebird Airlines before meeting its end in the USA in 2012.
Ansett leased HYX from GATX, which leads the world in railcar leasing and serves customers across North America, Europe, and India. Through Trifleet, GATX operates a global tank container fleet and, in partnership with Rolls-Royce, owns one of the largest aircraft spare engine leasing portfolios.
Founded in Chicago in 1898 by Max Epstein as Atlantic Seaboard Dispatch, GATX began by shipping beer in refrigerated railcars for Duquesne Brewing. Renamed German-American Car Co. in 1902 and General American Tank Car Corp. in 1916, the company has called Chicago home since its start.
“This company started out with quite a large capital in 1898; only it did not consist of money. It just consisted of ideas, of faith, and of some nerve.” Max Epstein

Step back to 1996, with Captain Geoff Bower, First Officer Greg Pearce, and Flight Engineer Glenn Dunstan as they expertly guide RMX into Perth, using the T-VASIS (Tee Visual Approach Slope Indicator System).
T-VASIS was an innovative airport lighting system designed to provide pilots with precise visual guidance on final approach. With its distinctive “T” patterns of lights, it indicated whether the aircraft was too high, too low, or exactly on the correct glide path.
And yes, if the Boeing 727 flight deck sounds ‘whisper quiet’ in this video, that’s because it truly was!
Welcome to Perth.

Making the occasion even more special, the ANSETT-ANA Fokker Friendship F27-2013 VH-FNH landed at the airport, possibly under the command of Captain Ron Stanton, marking the beginning of a new era for air travel on the Sunshine Coast.
Officially known as Sunshine Coast Airport (MCY), the airfield (originally established in 1961 as Maroochy Airport) is located in Marcoola. It started as an isolated, inaccessible marshy grass strip that forced the aero club members to travel via Nambour to reach it.
Maroochydore translates to “place of the black swan” or ‘place of the red-billed bird’. The name comes from the Yuggera and Gubbi Gubbi Aboriginal languages, originating from the word muru-kutchi, which refers to the distinct red bill of the Australian black swan commonly found along the river.
The airport had its fair share of high-profile visits, most notably in 1983 when Princess Diana and Prince Charles touched down for their first visit to the Sunshine Coast.
It was also a critical hub during the 2002 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), accommodating jets for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The 727-100, meanwhile, was distinguished by a unique oval-shaped centre-engine air intake with a shorter S-duct, while the 727-200 featured a round intake.
These visual and structural differences make the two variants easily distinguishable on the ramp. The 727-100 excelled on thinner, shorter routes, thanks to its lighter operating weight and impressive short-field performance.
In contrast, the 727-200 was optimised for higher passenger densities and longer stage lengths, meeting the growing demands of expanding air travel networks.
On 1 January 1967, a remarkable photograph captured the energy of an era ready for transformation. That same year, the aviation industry reached a major milestone: the stretched Boeing 727-200 completed its first flight on 27 July 1967 and officially entered airline service that December.
The introduction of the 727-200 marked the expansion of one of the most iconic trijets in the history of commercial aviation, embodying progress and innovation that defined the late 1960s.
Delivered in August 1965, one of ANSETT-ANA’s early 727-77s (VH-RMD -100 series) is pictured landing on Essendon’s short runway 17, a reminder of the aircraft’s remarkable versatility and performance in the early pure jet (or FANJET) era.

Douglas DC-9-31 VH-CZC, Boeing 727-277A VH-RMY and Boeing 727-77 VH-RMR.The Boeing 727-200 was exactly 20 feet (6.1 meters) longer than the 727-100.
The stretch was achieved by Boeing by adding two 10-foot fuselage sections: one in front of the wings and one behind them.
Here is how the lengths compare:
727-100: 133 feet 2 inches (40.6 meters)
727-200: 153 feet 2 inches (46.7 meters)

Both Ansett Boeing 727s, VH-ANE and VH-RMN, wore the final Eastwest livery for a brief period, each featuring a full interior reconfiguration with 164 economy seats, vibrant seat covers, and plush dark green carpets.
East-West was Australia’s pioneering ‘third’ airline. Under the Ansett umbrella, it transformed into an affordable, one-class leisure brand (much like Jetstar to Qantas today), offering a unique flying experience unmatched in today’s skies.
Spare seats were a rarity on the ever-popular and remarkably comfortable Eastwest 727s. Passengers enjoyed complimentary bubbles onboard, with service and promotions strongly focused on the Gold Coast and Queensland. If bubbles are your thing, Mrs Sprakling flowed non-stop (like the 727s!)
As the Eastwest brand neared its sunset, there were a few infamous moments at Coolangatta/Gold Coast Airport: an Ansett-painted 727 (with Eastwest crew) and an Eastwest-painted 727 (with Ansett crew) departing OOL for Sydney at the same time, causing more than a little confusion on the tarmac.
The confusion, while humorous in hindsight, made for some classic ‘herding cats’ moments on the tarmac back in 1993. Eastwest’s 727s quickly won the hearts of both crews and passengers on the busy SYD-OOL-SYD and MEL-OOL-MEL routes.
While the Eastwest brand left Australian skies for good on 31 December 1993, it will always be remembered as the trailblazer that claimed the ‘Australia’s Third Airline’ title, leaving behind a legacy of remarkable Tamworth and Australian history, dedicated, friendly employees, and happy passengers.
