But what follows here is anything but:
“Le parfum est le frère du son invisible.” - and in this case, music quite literally has a scent.
Very soon I will premier Love is Louder by Benjamin Attahir on tour in Schleswig-Holstein, together with the wonderful Harish Shankar and the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Sinfonieorchester.
And Love is Louder continues with its olfactory world premiere and my debut at the on, performing the same work with the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, perfumer Erich Berghammer and conductor Georg Köhler, followed by a tour.
Love is Louder is a new clarinet concerto dedicated to me by Benjamin Attahir - a piece that explores the deep connection between sound and scent, and invites the audience into a multi-sensory experience.
While the orchestra plays the music, perfumer Erich Berghammer creates real-time scent compositions from natural essences. Light, colour, fragrance, and sound become one.
Inspired by Kaija Saariaho’s D’om le vrai sens, and in particular the movement ‘l’Odorat’, this new work expands that idea. At its core lies the symbol of the rainbow: universal and fluid - like music itself.
Red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, indigo, violet… each movement carries its own world of sound and scent. 🌈
And perhaps that is the essence of it all: love, like music and fragrance, cannot be held - only experienced.
