Vang Vieng is just chill. Little temples, quaint bridges, mystical mountain views, and the best streetside sandwich ever at Mama’s. (There are a bunch of stands selling seemingly similar sandwiches, but I swear this one is the og, and it was AMAZING.) I’m glad we went when we did, because this place is so, so worthy of visiting, I fear it may become a Hoi An in the next decade.

I thought Bangkok took the prize for over-the-top maximalist temples, but Laos … you are a true hidden gem. There’s something glam yet rooted in nature about your aesthetic, and I am so here for it.

Aside from the smattering of temples, which seemed more like everyday places of worship for locals than of a particular historical significance, Vang Vieng is known more for its stunning natural beauty and adventure sports (kayaking, tubing, paragliding, hot air balloons, etc.) than its cultural merits. While our hands-down best experiences in Vang Vieng were getting out of town and into the countryside, the town itself has a bit of a “shabby chic” vibe that is quite appealing, with an interesting mix of local life, backpackers, and group tours from Korea (yes, there were more Korean tourists here than any other place in Laos we visited). It was a fascinating look into a different side of Laos, far different from tradition and history-rich Luang Prabang, the quaint rustic charm of Nong Khiaw, and the fast-developing Vientiane.

Oh, and if you’re looking for a unique experience in Vang Vieng, try getting your hair washed for 30 minutes, all for $2. We saw a bunch of locals getting their hair washed every night at one of the many salons in town, so we decided to try it. It was a great way to wind down after a day of sweating in humidity.

We tried so many ways to capture the awe we felt at the breadth and depth of the panorama of karsts jutting from the vast rice fields of Vang Vieng. Everywhere you turn, you get this surreal vision of prehistoric beauty, like you’re living in a screensaver or in Jurassic Park. Vang Vieng truly took my breath away, so much so that its party reputation (easily avoidable if you want it to be, like we did) and relative lack of historic sites and temples are all but forgotten. Just these views alone make Vang Vieng 100% worth the visit.

But alas, photos and videos will just never do Vang Vieng justice. So here’s the best I can do, and just know that these images are absolutely nothing compared to witnessing these wonders in real life.

Yes, we went to Sukhothai for its stunning 13th-century UNESCO Heritage Site temples, but what really put our time there over the top included:

1. The amazing resort we stayed at, where the lush, serene grounds (they even had their own ancient stupa!) was exactly the wind-down we needed after a long, humid day of exploring temple ruins.

2. Sangkhalok Street of Art, located in an area of traditional pottery factories, with its 3D murals using fragments of the famed Sangkhalok ceramics.

3. A lovely little restaurant seemingly in the middle of nowhere where we had lunch on the way to Si Satchanala, another historic temple park an hour away from Sukhothai. The green bridge we had to cross to find the restaurant was so picturesque.

4. Last but not least, what may be the prettiest airport in the world (scroll to the last two videos). I mean, there’s a zoo literally next to the airport (you can see giraffes from the runway), so you know this airport has to be unlike any other I’ve seen.

It had been yet another sweaty, rewarding, exhausting, awe-inspiring day in Vang Vieng, so we decided to treat ourselves to a glass of wine overlooking the Nam Song River as the setting sun cast magical, ever-changing reflections on the water. Hot air balloons hovered in the sky as paragliders floated by, the undulating silhouette of the karst formations providing a surreal backdrop to the long boats buzzing by. It was so peaceful here, and I was glad we gave Vang Vieng a chance rather than giving into some of the more scary headlines about this town.

We made sure to avoid what had been problematic in the past about this area (drunk tubing, swing diving, rowdy bars — not that we would have done any of these anyway), and just enjoyed watching the airborne activities rather than partaking. We focused more on exploring the countryside and rural villages, and for us, it was that side of Vang Vieng that made this town unforgettable.

If there was one place we had to visit in Vientiane, this was it.

We only had essentially half a day in Vientiane before we had to fly back to Bangkok. There were plenty of places I wanted to see, but if I had to pick one, I’m SO glad it was Wat Si Saket. I mean, of course, this temple is beautiful. It’s so different from many of the other temples we had visited in Laos, mainly for the stunning interior of the main temple, full of vibrant murals and hundreds of little niches housing tiny Buddha images, and its terrace lined with dozens of Buddha statues. (Neither photos nor videos were allowed in the main sanctuary, so I was only able to capture it through its carved windows.)

We had gotten there as soon as it opened, so we were thankfully the only ones there for a while, but as soon as a tour group entered, we escaped to the outer periphery of the main temple, with its lush grounds and incredibly ornate stupas. But little did we know that we were about to discover yet another amazing aspect of Wat Si Saket — its monastery. Young adult monks peacefully reading in the early morning hours, orange-robed children, who couldn’t have been older than 10, having breakfast with their mother — this was what made Wat Si Saket come alive. It wasn’t just a historic remnant but a living, breathing, functioning aspect of modern Laotian society.

Luang Prabang is such a fascinating mix of ancient temples and traditional monasteries, picturesque river views with lush tropical greenery, chic hipster restaurants and bars, and historic colonial architecture. Honestly, every romantic notion one may have of Southeast Asia combined with the convenience and amenities suitable for Western tastes may be found here. It may well be the perfect Southeast Asian destination.

I’m sorry for the repetition, but Wat Sri Sawai is just too stunning not to show it over and over and over. I was in awe of this 12th century temple at Sukhothai, originally constructed by the Khmer (think Angkor Wat) as a Hindu sanctuary, and later converted into a Buddhist temple. The three intricately carved prangs, shown here, are simply so majestic to behold, I honestly couldn’t get enough.

Side note: The internet tells you to cover your knees and shoulders at Sukhothai Historical Park, but when we checked into our hotel, they told us it was totally fine to wear what I was wearing. And tbh, it was so hot and humid at the end of October when we went (though you would never be able to tell in our photos) that even a flowy long skirt felt like I was wearing a sauna 😅.

Wow, was I happy this day. Yes, the iconic bridge that the villagers build every year across this river had not yet been built when we visited Ban Pha Thang village. (It had been drizzling on and off during our entire stay.) Yet through its authentic scenes of village life, Laos showed me once again how achingly precious and simple life can and should be. Ban Pha Thang may not have flashy temples (though its temple is so pretty) or stunning waterfalls, but its quiet serenity of smiling faces (somewhat curious of our presence in their backyard), children playing in the river despite the rain, and chickens and cows roaming freely about revealed to me not just the beauty of this country but how beautifully simple life should be.
