I’ve always been in the team “form follows function.”
For me, beauty in interiors often appears when we solve a real problem in an elegant way.
In this Amsterdam apartment, the kitchen is placed deep inside a long room, far from natural light. And Amsterdam is not exactly the sunniest city.
So the main idea was to bring more light into this part of the space.
We changed the kitchen layout, moved the cooktop and extractor hood, and placed the ventilation duct above the ceiling.
Instead of hiding it in a heavy box, I proposed angled surfaces around the hood. Their shape follows the function.
These planes will be finished with warm beige tinted mirrors, reflecting daylight deeper into the apartment.
The backsplash and worktop are made in natural stone, keeping the kitchen practical and durable.
We removed most upper cabinets, leaving only tall storage columns and a small shelf for art, books and glassware.
I also added a Vibia light fixture. I first saw it at an exhibition in Milan and was immediately fascinated by the quality of light it creates. The shadows resemble sunlight filtering through tree leaves, creating a subtle illusion of a skylight and bringing even more warmth to the space.
A functional solution, but also a softer, lighter and more atmospheric kitchen. ✨
In a house that already had two living rooms downstairs, this space on the second floor needed a different identity. With its connection to the roof terrace, it felt natural to turn it into a more intimate lounge with a darker, warmer, more masculine mood
This space was created for a client who works a lot and is almost always travelling, so the main task was to design a calm and restorative room.
The walls are covered in Nobilis natural sisal wallpaper with a very soft, elegant shimmer. I have a huge love for natural wallcoverings, they look timeless, feel incredibly pleasant to the touch and give beautiful acoustics to the room.
In the carousel you can also see the renovation process and, my favourite part, the original “before” photo of this room.
At 11 I decided that I wanted to become an architect and asked my parents to move me to an art gymnasium. It was a school with an intensive art program, in addition to the regular subjects we studied painting, drawing, ceramics, art history and many other disciplines. That experience shaped the way I see space and composition today.
Later I studied architecture and started taking real commissions while I was still at university. After graduation I co founded a studio and took part in TV shows about interiors as an invited designer.
Almost four years ago I began a new chapter and continued independently as Atelier Anna Sysoeva, together with a small remote team that helps me with drawings and 3D. During these years my projects have lived in nine countries, from private homes to hotels and cafés.
In my work I love to mix architecture, art and storytelling. I often create murals and artworks specifically for each interior so the space feels very personal for the people who live or work there. I speak Russian, English and Spanish and I am now learning French, which helps me feel at home in many places.
